What in Gods Name is Torque Managment

I am going to sound like a real newbie here but i have been reading for a while and people are throwing around this phrase "torque Managment" What is it. Is it the reason that when i stand on it off the line with 300 horses i crawl. because if it is than the inventor needs to be taken out and shot. Just my rant so sorry. But please what is "Torque Managment"

I think this refers to the transmission computer controlled system that selects the proper gear based on conditions, and locks out the torque converter as appropriate. Torque management system determines your transmission shift points. When you run the transmission in the "tow" mode, these shift points are changed.

 

 

If you have a problem in that department, you have "torque mismanagement" instead. :thumbs:

I have given, and heard, this rant many times. Yes, Torque Management is the problem. Your truck is fly by wire throttle control. When you floor it you are just telling the PCM what you want. The PCM then decides if it will give it to you. (Hook up a scanner and notice Throttle requested=100% compare it to Throttle applied=40%). It is programed to protect driveline parts.

TM also controls transmission shifting. Not so much to protect the trans but to make the shift smoother. See lots of drivers like a smooth shift. To get a smooth shift line pressures are set lower. So the trans won't slip, with the low line pressures, engine power needs to be reduced during the shift. I discovered this when I got a tune. I had all TM removed and told the tuner to leave all transmission settings stock. I now notice a slight slippage with WOT shifts. No big deal I just have to provide my own TM and lift a little. Seldom do any WOT shifts anyway. Maybe should have had the shifts firmed up a little but then I would be complaining about harsh shifts in normal driving. Anyway $150 for the tune and I can now use the 300HP I paid for.

Just like was said earlier, torque management is a computer controlled system that keeps you from jumping right on it and going. Get a tune done and you will see a big difference. My tune was done by Westers and what a jump in performance I now have.

Yes GM started torque management in the 1996 MY. Just remember removing it will increase the pain in your pocket book later on in your trucks life.

I dont know if I agree with that one hundred percent. Are you saying a 96 truck would last more years under the same conditions than a 95 without TM?

It's a safety feature that people who like to roast tires don't like. GM put it there for several purposes, one of which being so that people won't roast the tires! Imagine if you needed to accelerate very very quickly, you floored it and all it did was spin the rear tire instead of actually MOVE you. ALot of people hate the TM, I happen to find it acceptable. If you don't want it, like people have stated, get a custom tune and have it tuned down or removed.

Just so no one gets any unrealistic expectations about a tune. You will not just sit there and roast your tires. Even with no TM you still have a heavy truck. A few feet of spin is about it.

 

Rant follows:

Ah the good old days when the driver provided the TM. Now your are not deemed competent to be able to accelerate quickly without spinning the tires. A few more years and no one will be able to perform a good hole shot. Even now many would not know how to stop on ice, without the ABS. The addition of the new safety features has led to a more inattentive driver and a lack of driving skills. Soon we will just be passengers as the truck pilots itself down the road. On the bright side since no one would be driving you could have a party on the way to a party.

100% agreement,many of todays drivers dont have the skills nessesary to handle all the horse power automobiles have today,but it feels like the the manufactures are saying here is 300 horsepower, but you can only drive it like theres 150.

For the record I am not one of those drivers! ha ha But as far as the tune goes and so called "torque management" I advise the firmer shifts and adjusting the converter lockup (I went up 10%) and I love it!

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?  
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery. 
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday. 
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
