trucks affected by wind

???  ???

Question concerning how are you affected while driving in the wind. The Avalanche I find to be blown around alot on a windy day on the highway. My 96 z71 ext cab was straight as an arrow no matter what conditions were. How are you guys finding the new Subs And Tahoes in windy conditions since they are on the same frame?

Thanks

I find my silverado to be horrible in thw wind.  I hate driving when it is windy.  Its like i have to fight the truck and it wears you out.

I'll admit its a bit abusive.  I can't believe that pickups have the problem though.  There isn't a lot of cross section on them.  I've been hardened though, I had an Olds Silhouette minivan that I learned with and drove for 6 years.  A trick I've picked up is to watch vehicles ahead of you and how they react to the wind.   ;)  (btw, I haven't followed one into the ditch yet!)

interesting to here this. Is the suspension to soft? Whats going to happen when I hook my 23ft camper up.

The tail will wag the dog.  :)  The longer the truck's wheel base the more stable, dually even better.

Speak of the devil.  Last night while going to Cheddar's to eat, I saw a "double crew cab" (meaning full size front door, second door, third door) dualie with an 8ft box, towing a long RV trailer.

If you want less wind effect, put larger (both diametrically and width wise) tires on your trucks.  Larger tires are harder to turn.  Bad part is, it decreases your turning radius too.

as long as you have adequate tounge weight you should be fine.  Your Av is within a few feet of the length of your travel trailer.  It also helps to run a little more air in the rear tires when you are towing, to help stiffen the side walls of the tires.

I get blown around some when towing my 32' trailer, but nothing I can't control.  The worst is when the suction of a semi passing you at 80 mph's wants to pull you into the side of it...

I get pushed around pretty good by cross winds. A crew cab with a camper shell has a lot of cross section.

I hate the wind. Mine gets blown around alot being a short bed reg cab. It is not nearly as bad as the 95 Bronco I had. Yes the truth is out. My name is John and I used to drive Fords.

Yeah, I live in the other windy city here in vegas, rarely a day that goes by there isn't some wind.  It gets extremely windy here and things get pretty bad.  I swear people around me in little cars must think I am drunk or something cause the truck goes all over the place.  I am always having to fight the wheel to keep the truck going straight.  It is a PITA.  It really sucks cause parts of our highways here have pretty high sound walls on the side to keep the noise out of neighborhood, but when you go from a walled section to an unwalled one there is a huge suction, and you involuntarily change lanes.       But you get used to it and learn how to control the truck pretty good in high winds.  Oh yeah, going 90 mph with a 50mph+ crosswind doesn't really help the situation out at all.

I find that the Av is a lot more sensitive to crosswinds than my '99 Sierra was.  Maybe the Z66 is better than my standard 2WD?

My Blazer's not that bad, but its noticable.  My mom's full size conversion van on the other hand gets thrown around.  You cannot go faster than 85mph and keep good control of the vehicle, probably about 80 in high winds.

In normal windy conditions my 95 Z71 does ok, a little swaying but not too bad.  About a month or so ago in Michigan we had some really high winds and I was on my way home from work and got blown halfway into the next lane by one of the gusts.  It sure took me by surprise!  Overall I would say it's typical of larger vehicles to get blown around more.  ???

I've been surprized by how much worse the 2500HD gets shoved around than the 91 1500.  I just chalk it up to the higher profile and bigger cab, but I would have thought the D-max engine would keep the front end pretty well settled compared to the little V-6.  I would have been wrong!

I've seen a lot of complaints about 1500 Av's being blown around, I guess it's the rear suspension, great ride but pretty mooshy.  My 2500, although 1000 pounds heavier can make it through the slalom faster then the 1500!  The HD springs are a lot tighter.
