Lug nut torque, is the dealer full of sh*t?

The manual says the torque spec. is 140#.

The dealer says 95# is good and they said sometimes the specs change. Dealer wasn't sure if specs changed for my vehicle or not.

I put them at 106#.

1. Is the dealer wrong?

2. Is 106# adequate?

3. Do you think that functionally, for this application, there is a meaningful difference between 106#, and 140#?

Thanks for the help.

The dealer said they tell people to not put it at 140# because if they get a flat that they have a hard time removing the lug nuts with the factory wrench.

That's fine reasoning, but I figure the manufacturer says 140# for a reason.

I have seen many passenger car manuals say 85# to 95#, but all my trucks have said 140# in the manual. I wonder why.

Just put them on as tight as you can with a breaker bar about the size of your lug wrench in the truck. Mine average around a 100 lbft with an 18" torque wrench.

I'm sure mine are in fact tighter than 106# right now. My uncle works at the dealership and did some work on the truck. He rotated the tires for me. He cranked them on with the impact wrench.

I just went around all the nuts when I got the truck home and made sure it clicked at 106#, so they are all at least 106#.

Thanks.

Yep, 140#'s is what they say. As long as they are all torqued down about the same, you shouldn't have to worry about it. Isn't a bad idea to recheck them after about 100 miles either.

I put mine about 120#'s. I use a 2 foot long tourque wrench, and re-tourque after 50 and 100 miles any time I touch the lugs... I also seem to be changing my tires around more than my shorts, so I'm always checking out of habit about every other fill-up....

I've put them at 140# before but then they're a real pain to get loose two weeks later. Besides, I always check the lugs before any tow or haul... O.C.A.-"Obsessive Compulsive Analism", I call it.... :(
