Installing the OEM Clearence lights

Recommended Posts

Hey guys...I am helping my buddy out with putting the new 2500 clearence cab lights on his 1500 truck.

I am a little confused...so far we have drilled the holes through the top where the lights are gonna be but we dont know how to get to the wires that feed down from there. how do i get access into the headliner ...do i just pull the whole thing down?

Don't forget to seal the wire holes with RTV when you install the lights. Relying just on the rubber light gaskets to keep water out may not be enough. I have read several complaints about factory installed clearance lights leaking.

When you order a snow plow prep package from the factory, you get clearance light wires already installed above the headliner, but not the lights.

No that wire is for a roof flashing amber light bar if you want to install one and the switch is on the dash front marked aux lights, its not for the cab clearance lights.

I think I can confirm this from another angle...The socket that the clearance lights wiring is under the access panel at the right side of the dash (visible when the door is open). That socket is unused on my 2005 2500HD which does not have clearance lights, but does have the roof lamp provision (included in the snow plow prep package).

Ok, let me ask this question:

If you order the snow plow prep pakage and roof clearance lights, are you telling me that the manufacturer will provide a separate switch and wiring harness just for a rotating amber light, a roofbar, or whatever else you want to install?

Exaaaaaaaaaactly.

There's a "push on-push off" button on the dash right next to the airbag light. It turns on whatever is attached to the roof lamp provision wiring, which in my case is a Whelen Mini-Edge strobe.

The wiring is just 2 conductors, a brown and a blue, and it's only hot when the switch is on.
