06 Double DIN

Has anyone fit a double din head unit in an 06?  Did you use the kit from Metra to do it?

This is really a good question. Not sure enough about the Tahoe, but for the full-sized GMC and Silverado things could be interesting on the install.

Crutchfield's catalog claims that none of the double din head units will fit. I'm not sure why, although I haven't called and talked with them. A while back, when I was really curious about all of this, I checked the measurements, and it all seems to fit. But, there is definitely something causing an issue, going by Crutchfield's install chart.

No, I don't think so... The factory radio is a "rectangle", no weird shape at all.

I know a couple of things -

Lots of the heads at Crutchfield "don't fit", and that I believe is due to a depth issue, because most of the heads they sell that do fit call for a modification. The mod, according to their tech notes, is to remove a rear support. I gather that's a support bracket for the factory unit, but my truck isn't even broken in yet - I haven't pulled the factory head to take a look.

The double din units at Crutch don't fit due to, and they admit this, the fact that they don't carry the metra part # 99-2003. They carry metra, but not that kit. If you buy a single din head from them, I wonder what they give you for a pocket, or filler?

What's needed from the kit, I think, is the brackets. Hit the metra site and look at the kit, I think you can toss all the plastic junk, just keep the brackets. Of course, brackets can be fabricated, but the kit is on fleabay for 15 bucks or so....

What I want is a Kenwood DPX-501. Double DIN, no cassette, signal to noise 105, and best, a USB port right on the front. Everything else (sub, speakers) is easy to figure out...

I spoke with a crutchfield rep before purchasing my Eclipse AVN5435 Head Unit. It is a 2din head unit and Clerance had told me that the double din unit say they do not fit the Silverados because because it is not a direct replacment. It will fit and that any car audio installer can install it. It is not a direct replacement so there for the show it doesnt fit. But he did tell me they do fit. I have a 2Din in my 06 Silverado and it looks almost factory.

Double Dins fit. Use the metra kit Suzuki\GM multi kit part #99-2003. It comes with a 2-din trim ring that has a plastic piece in the middle that can be filed down.

If you want it to sit flush you have to take out a support bracket that is held in by 2 rivets and cut it down. If you don't mind it sticking out a little you won't even have to take out the bracket. (I cut mine out)

I know the bottom monitor looks fake but its not. That's how the picture came out. I'll try to take another one. :driving:

Digging up an old thread...

Can you describe how you cut the support bracket? I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a DPX-501 and want it to look flush like your unit.

Thanks
