The Camaro blew.......

So I'm driving the Camaro around, almost back home, and figured since I hadn't driven it in a few weeks I should "make sure" there isn't any build up. plus, the motor seems to be broken in now, and I haven't just let it loose yet. so I shift into first, and from a rool at about 5 MPH I NAIL it. it's starts flyin, but my tach isn't working for some reason(the wires are all connected, cant figure it out....bad tach?), and have to shift by sound. I figure I was over 5000 RPM, so I shift up and JUSt before I heard a very loud POP and some "CHINK"s. I can hear metal bouncing around and was the motor had given up the ghost. but wait.... a few seconds later and one more CHINK, the motor is still acting fine, just incredably LOUD....still I ease it a few block home, get in the garage ASAP, and pop the hood.....no holes, leaks, puddles....look yunder the car on the passenger side....nothing.

So I start it up again, and it sounds like I don't have the exhuats hooked up, and yes the motor is still acting "normal"....so I look under the drivers side...and there it is....

that CHINK sound? well, you know where the "end"/collector of the header meets the "start" of the rest of the exhuast? held on by three bolts and a gasket? the bolts snapped, that chink must have been them bouncing off the frame rails....and the gasket is AWOL also.

Neighbors weren't too pleased at my Top Fuel Dragster impersonation when I reentered the neighborhood.

Glad to hear it wasn't anything major. The Hedman headers on my 65 have the new design at that point. It has three bolts but it has a ball flange. Way better on sealing up that area plus you can angle the exhaust if you have to. My headers also have the Jet Hot coating. That made a big difference with reducing the under hood heat.

Glad it's not fatal :seeya:

What's this "break in" people keep talking about?

Sounds like tomfoolery and magic to me. It should be outlawed.

I wonder if some of those flexible exhaust sections would help. Sounds like the motor was torgued way over and letting off and shifting allowed the motor to suddenly untorque snapping the bolts to the exhaust maniflod which wasn't as flexible as the motor mount.

Glad it was nothing serious.

Wingnut I have no idea what breakin schedule he's talkin about either. Must be the Bimmers that need broken in easy. Heck he drove it long enough for the collector bolts to loosen up. That's broke in in my book.

I drive everything like I was 17 and stole the preachers car AND daughter...From the day I get it.

Never had a problem with any motor because of it.
