fuel sender/gauge/pump

I have a 1993 Ext cab 4x4. Someone who owned the truck before me, swapped the TBI motor for a Vortech motor. The fuel gauge is resting way past full and doesn't move.

 

1. Is there something I can check i.e. ground etc..?

2. If I replace the fuel sender do I buy the one for a '93 or the 96

3. Would I have to replace the fuel pump too? I am not sure if the fuel pump was changed when the Vortech motor was swapped in.

If you unplug the connector at the fuel tank the gauge will sweep one way or the other, I can't remember which way it will go. After it does that, ground the purple wire in the 3 way connector you unplugged. It should sweep the other way, make sure you have the key on. That will tell you if the problem is in the tank. You will need to replace it with 93 model parts. The connectors will be different on 96 parts. I would defiantly replace the pump while I was there.

Well, I tried that with some strange results. With the key off the gauge would register the right amount of fuel, as soon as you turned the key on it would go back to where it was (way above full)....I regrounded it just to make sure. The purple wire at the connector had 8.6 volts going to it. Do you think the fact that voltage seems low would have anything to do with it?

If the gauge stays at the same place with the purple wire open and grounded, that would point to the cluster as the most probable cause.

I will check tonight again to make sure, but am pretty sure the gauge does sweep when the purple wire is grounded. If it does sweep, is that an indication of the sending unit being bad?
