Smashed Steering Column

I had my 1990 C1500 stolen. They got in through the back sliding window, and smashed the top of my steering column. They used a screwdriver to pull back on the 'slider' (left side - ignition switch?) for the ignition to get the truck running.

 

I now have the truck back. When I put the key in the ignition it only locks the steering wheel, but doesn't start the truck. The only key that works is a common screwdriver! I have heard mention of a "Theft Repair Kit" for these vehicles (I guess many have been stolen the same way), but my dealer has never heard of it. This truck has tilt steering and pulse wipers which means factory replacement parts are expensive.

 

Any one heard of the "theft repair kit"? Do you know if it is available from GM? Is this going to be a difficult repair?

Never heard of a theft repair kit. You fix what's broke, that's it.

I have seen a billet column protector for the 88-98 trucks, I don't know if you have to remove the steering wheel or if it is hinged and locks on.

 

I think I saw it in a Stylin' Concepts ad, I think it's made by Grant the steering wheel people.

Never heard of a theft repair kit.  You fix what's broke, that's it.

Peeling the left side of the column like that is so common on late 80's early 90's GM vehicles around Cleveland metro, that roughly 80% of the Buicks/Olds' from that era that I stop have the columns still peeled from previous thefts or attempts.

Its not a repair to be tackled yourself. Had one towed in last week that someone thought they could fix. I charge more when it comes in, in a box.
