Air intake, hi perf. muffler or both?

Sorry too lazy to search...

I have an '05 Sierra CC 4x4 z71 with the 5.3 and 4.10 rear. I want to "slightly" improve gas mileage, power and sound. I don't tow a travel trailer anymore but do fill up the bed with sports gear frequently. I've read where the correct muffler (backpressure) needs to be selected otherwise power loss can occur.

Looking for recommendations on whether to go air intake, muffler or both?

Anybody with the same truck? What did you go with? Experiences?

Thanks in advance!

No matter what you do, with air intake, exhaust, plugs, snake oil, none of that is going to really make any noticable improvment in fuel economy.

What about power, sound and feel? Reality is I just want to do some simple hands on mods on my truck. Thx.

The intake will give you a hissing sound, and the muffler should give you that louder exhaust sound that we all love.

Have to agree, got to love the sound of the louder sounding exhaust. I would like to no what exhaust sounds best to make the truck sound mean.

My b/f has the intake in his car ( yes he's the car person and I'm the truck person) and he seems to like it.

Check the recent topics. I bumped one I was part of looking for exhaust systems and opinions. We had a few people posting pictures and sound clips of the Magnaflow exhaust systems. There are a few Flowmaster systems as well. You can also check their sites but I didnt find them very useful. The people who posted here seemed to do a lot better job. Look for the topic that says something like "Magnaflow Sound Clips Only"

Some are slow learners, my son for one, he has a loud exhasut and still cannot figure out why he always gets pulled over. (it just could not be that you call attention to yourself and if you are hot dogging) Also you will loss engine efficency (MPG and power) at lower RPMs. If it was that simple to increase HP amd MPG, trucks would come that way given the HP wars and pressure to increase vehilce MPG.

i just purchased my tahoe z71 less than a month ago..

ive already got gibson exhaust, and an AFE hi-flow filter installed. it just sounds a lot tougher than a stock system at idle, and you'll probably only notice an increase in acceleration at high speeds on the fwy..

other than that.. bolt ons wont really do much for these vehicles IMO. I'd have to admit though, modding these suckers if FAR, FARRR more cheaper than modding my bmw's. LOL.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm just getting the itch to do something to my stock truck. Seems the consensus is the air intake and muffler mods really only add a different sound. I may do it just to dust off my tools.

I have a 2003 Yukon and added a Flowmaster muffler and dual exhaust and a K&N FIPK (intake kit) and definately noticed a difference with both.

The exhaust was the first thing I added and I loved it. There was a lot more noise inside the cab, but that would probably not happen with a truck. Anyway, it sounds great and definately gave it a boost in performance. The FIPK also helped out in performance. Yes, there was added noise too. On the dyno, you are probably only seeing 3-7% increase in horsepower per add on.

I think the manufacturers claim added MPG, but it wasn't noticeable to me. If anything, my MPG went down merely because the improved sound keeps my foot in the throttle more!
