Wheels for 305/70R16 wheels?

I am thinking about moving up to 305/70R16 tires from the 285/75R16 that I have. The math comes out to about the same diameter. The 285s were pushing it (in my opinion) on the 6.5"(?) factory HD wheels, but I have gotten over 70K miles out of the tires. I feel I should get wider wheels for 305 tires. I was wondering what width wheels you are using with these tires, and what backspacing for an 03 1500HD.

Thanks,

Scot

Don't know about the HD, but mine came with 7.5" wide wheels.

305's are a bit much for the 6.5" factory HD wheel. some people do it, but usually end up with uneven tire wear (wearing more in the middle). A 305 is 12" wide mathmatically, an 8" wheel would work fine, a 10" may give you trouble seating around the rim.

I agree with 03HD. An 8" wide wheel should work fine with those tires although the tires may rub without a lift. As far as BS goes if you do not plan to use a spindle type lift then you can go with 5" of BS otherwise stick with 4.5".

I'm new to the forums, and see ppl asking about tires in here so I wonder if anyone has any experience with putting a set of 325/60 R18's on a 1994 GMC 1500. They are just over 33" high and 13.5 wide. I'm adding 2" of lift all around so I know the diameter will clear but I'm not sure what offset or rim width I should use. Any information would be appreciated. The truck will also have some bushwhacker pocket style flares and custom bumpers to give more clearance also.
