This is going to take some getting used to

I have never drivin a rear wheel drive car or truck in the snow and ice. Took me about 10 minutes to go one mile to the highway from my house. I can normally get to work in that time.

I did do a little unplanned off-roading last night. Where I work the parking lots werent cleared, so they were covered with ice and a little snow. But, the streets by where I work were cleared and not to slick. But, when my front tires hit the ice and snow in the parking lot, the truck stopped turning and went straight. So, I said screw and spun the wheels straight and drove over the median  into the exit lane(no cars there thank god) and over the curb into the grassy part of the lot. I drove close to where I was supposed to park and parked in the grass. At least I didnt have to worry about anyone hitting it when they were doing gonuts.

Kind of an aside but I am surprised by the number of drivers who fail to realize that 4 wheel drive only helps you in acceleration situations NOT braking.......easy to get lulled into that false sense of security with 4X4..

Paul,

The best thing to do is take the truck out and play with it. That way you will get the feel for it. By the way 4WD is no better on ice then any other vehicle.

Stepside is right. 4X4 just means there are 4 tires slipping and sliding instead of two.

And (God help me) Newbie is right too.  4X4 will get you moving but not stopping.  Personally I hate ABS on ice too.  Feels like none of the tires are slowing down.

Speaking of a rear wheel driver, I think I'm gonna rob a bank so I can buy a new Lincoln Blackwood pick up and have rear wheel drive only.  I mean if I'm gonna buy a $50K truck, why would I want 4WD?  That would just confuse the parking valet!

You mean you actually got some snow and or ice out of this last little storm that went through?  I wasn't even close to being cold enough here the last couple of nights to snow, did get a very small amount of rain though.

I believe thats  4 out of 1354.....a useful info ratio of

0.002954209748892171344165435745938.  I believe, however, that this post lowers it some.

Lets not be so quick in admitting that!  He posted a bit of somewhat useful info in the haircut thread, yet it was because of his wife.  So unless I get proof otherwise, I will believe that any useful info posted under the name of NewbieZ71 was been posted by his wife.....   ;)

I harken you back to the long ago days of last February when I posted a listing of RPO Codes for the '01 Sierra 1500 helping to fill some blanks in someone else list.  A new member if I remember right.  So not only did I supply useful info, I apparently (hard to believe) supplied it to someone WHO KNEW LESS THAN ME!

What Newbie said about 4x4 and braking, I see every time I head north in MI in Winter.

Last weekend, lake-effect snow made the raods on I-75 pretty treacherous for about 75 miles.  I saw 11 vehicles just recently slid/skidded off into the ditch or median, and you know, all but one of them were 4x4s!!!!

Thanks GreenRado....I believe that ups my ratio by some 0.000738552437223042000...an increase to 0.003692762186115210000... not that I count EXACTLY.

I find it somewhat humorous that a thread that ended up discussing how I imparted some relevant information is titled "This is going to take some getting used to"........
