pumpkin bolts

I just read in the service manual (the factory one) that if you remove the rear axle cover you are NOT to reuse the original bolts. It clearly states, (and I quote) - "IMPORTANT: Do not reuse the rear axle housing cover bolts".

I, therefore, did not remove the cover. Do these bolts have some sort of locking devise or something on the threads that would keep them from being reused? Or are they one time bolts? Meaning they can only be torqued once? Since I have never had them out I don't know. Are you guys reusing your bolts? And if so, do you find any leaks or need to have them re-torqued after removing the pumpkin?

Just curious. I just changed the rear axle fluid and nothing on the magnet but a small coating of black dust. And this is the first time (20K miles). Not too shabby IMO.

I just changed the rear diff fluid out on my truck (see below) and on my moms 2000 Dodge Ram Van.  I reused all the bolts, and no leaks at all.

I reused mine.  I changed the rear diff oil last summer.  Almost have 10K on the new oil and everything is alright

:ehh: I work at a shop and we always re-use the original bolts. I also have 3 friends that work at GM dealerships and they always re-use the original bolts also. Just my .02$

I've always reused mine.  I figure how much damage are you going to do with 25-40 ft.lbs. of torque.  ( I can understand the need to replace torque to spec head bolts)
