Steering shaft noise

Is there a bulletin out on the slight knocking you feel and hear in the steering column?

It feels like a u-joint in the column might be making the sound.

2005 1/2 ton silverado.

Yes this is a ongoing problem for atleast the last 4 years not sure if the 02 and lower models suffer from it but the 03 to present sure do.Pretty much everyone with a silverado has or will have this problem and there is really no fix at this time for it more of a temp band aid. They will not even replace the shafts anymore, they will stuff a black lube into the steering shaft and say it's fixed which it is not.The lube didnt last at all in my truck, some say it fixed theres but not mine thats for sure.

I have heard rumors of a new revised shaft coming out soon hopefully, because the greese is nothing but a temp band aid imo and it should be required that gm engineers put there d**n heads togather to fix this problem once and for all!Even the borg aftermarket shaft is garbage i have heard and actually becomes far worse then the stock one ever was. I just hope gm doesnt do what the old gm would do and say the fix is trading in for a 07 redesign model. :)

Right on, bigdogxx. And yes, this problem does affect the '02 and below models as well. It's been a problem since the NBS came out in '99. Quite a run for a problem, isn't it???

I can only give one bit of advise call the 800 gm number and tell them this is unexceptible. And do not take a couple free token oil changes in return i remained calm and kept my cool and was able to get a free extra 75k 0 deduct gmpp warranty on top of the 13k i have on it now.I would still rather have them fix this problem instead of ignoring it but mabey if they started handing out free warranty to everyone mabey they will realize it will be more cost affective to fix it right.

I took my '04 in two times, and the second time they replaced the intermediate steering shaft. So far, for 10,000+ miles, it has been good :knocks on wood:

Hopefully it will last. Maybe your dealer will actually replace the shaft this time.....

From what my dealer and everyone i talked to at gm the only way to get a new shaft is if the old one is damaged as in bent and not useable at all, mainly if it is damaged from a accident.Other then that they will not and the dealers have no inventory and can not order them so next time it happens the only thing they will do is lube it which like the person above me said it doesnt last at all, mine was good for about 50 miles.

Strange. It only took my dealer 4 hours to diagnose the problem and replace the shaft. They had the item in stock and didn't have to order it or anything. I guess I was lucky.

Thats because they were replacing them till about a month and a half ago, like i said i hope it's because they are making yet another revision to it to hopefully fix it for good. But when you have to do it again when they pull the tbs it states that they can no longer replace the shaft but to only use lube on it.

GM is in the process of coming out with another "redesigned" shaft according to our GM service rep.

They are not supposed to be out until the end of the year however.

So far my '04 with 22,000 miles on it is quiet.....SO FAR!!!!

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Effectively immediately, we will be restricting the Intermediate-Shafts on some General Motors vehicles. Recent parts reviews indicated that the majority of the Intermediate Shafts are being replaced instead of being lubed as directed in the following Service Technical Bulletins, for Trucks the bulletin number is 00-02-35-003J and for Cars the bulletin number is 01-02-32-001F. Please contact PQC only when you have a valid request for an I Shaft such as an accident repair.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The following part numbers will be restricted:

For Trucks, the Part numbers are: 88965505, 89060582 and 19149105.

For Cars, the Part numbers are: 15243954, 10367811, 10376430, 10376429, 10376428, and 10377680.

Prior to contacting PQC, please review the Service Information bulletins, for Cars 01-02-32-001F or for Trucks 00-02-35-003J.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Lucky you. I had made a post several months ago, where I couldn't get GM to do the repair. I even talked to Customer Service and after begging and pleading they said no. I told her I would not buy a GM product again and all she said is "okay, I'll make a note that you're dissatisfied."
