Vortec engines

So what makes the vortec a vortec? I am trying to learn the in's and out's of my '97 and i thought the engine would be the best place to start.

So what is the fuel delivery like? is there an injector for each cylinder or is there a throttle body chamber thing that distributes the fuel/air mixture? Also, i have a '97 5.7L, would it be OHC or the pushrod style?

Yeah, i am a noobie when it comes to inner workings of trucks.

vortec refers to the swirl created i forget by what something in the heads. the swirl is supposed to mix the air and fuel better. better mix better burn more power.

most are pushrod iirc the LT5 was the only ohc attempt but it's rather rare zr-1 corvett engine.

lost at the moment weither you have injectors or TBI

97' motors will have injectors for each cylinder. Earlier motors (ala my 94) are throttle body setup.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Vortec_engine This is a pretty good source to check out for history on the motor. Some of the years I've found to be a little off, but for the most part its pretty spot on.

PS - the LT5 is still the only DOHC 32v V8 was not produced by GM. It was designed by Geoff Jeal of Lotus Motors. It was produced by Mercury Marine in Stillwater, OK. 6,936 ZR-1 were produced. They were 375 hp from 90-92, and 405 hp from 93-95.
