gas guage trying to die

3 times in the last week, my fuel guage has registered completely empty despite having either a completely full or nearly full tank.  

when i crank up, it'll be pegged to empty and then SLOWLY move towards the true reading.  Any ideas what would cause this???  75K on the truck so warranty is LONG gone.

Hmm bad sending unit, or corroded wire.  Crawl by the gas tank and check the wires and make sure that they are all clean and none of them are frayed.  Someone else will probably be able to tell you exactly what to look for, but it sounds like a bad sending unit, or a bad connection on the wires.

VERY common problem on our trucks. The sending unit goes bad. At the dealer, you're talking around $400 if you are out of Warranty  :angry:
