How to remove Swirl Marks?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the swirl marks on a black colored truck? And also, a wax I can use next time that maybe wont swirl so much, if at all? I like black when it looks clean, which most of the time my truck is. But the swirl marks in the sun have to go. Makes it look like I spent 3 hours waxing it while being intoxicated! :)

What kind of wax did you use that caused swirl marks? Wax should not cause swirl marks.

There are several "swirl mark reovers" on the market. I know Duragloss and MMM make a good one. Of course this is just a very fine polish that will help polish away the marks.

Once you get them out, I would suggest that you try Duragloss 105. It is a new syn wax that will not leave you with swirls and it will outlast anything that I have tried.

One last thing, some people believe in waxing/polishing in a back and forth motion instead of a circualr motion. This is suppoed to cut down on swirls.

I used McQuiers. I guess I assumed it was from me. Maybe it is leftover from the bodyshop when they buffed out the scratches the stupid dealer put in them from going through a BRUSH carwash. I'll have to look into that DuraGloss. Is that the comapny that makes it? It sounds like a product from DuPont. Thanks again for the info.

Duragloss is the maker of the products. They do not sell through mass merchandisers, just traditional "real" parts stores. They offer a complete line of top quality stuff. Do not be fooled by the appearance of the bottles, their money is speant on what is inside.

Menzerna. By far the most effictive line of car care products I have ever used on my black K2500HD (check out the pictures in the garage).

Classic Motoring Accessories

There are no shortcuts when eliminating swirl marks. They must be buffed out.

1. Spend some time on the site and educate yourself about swirl marks.

2. Buy the Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action polisher.

3. Select the correct Menzerna products. Spend the time determining what product or kit you need, as there are a lot of options.

4. Don't forget to clay bar the truck first.

5. Set aside at least 8 hours to do the job properly.

6. NEVER use a commercial car wash. Use only premium washing and drying cloths. I use the California water blade to dry.

Be careful, you can put all those swirl marks back into your paint with just one bad washing.

And yes, GM paint stinks. It just shows up worse on black.

Good luck, let me know how you make out...

So what exactly causes swirl marks? I am extremely careful when waxing and even claying did not seem to remove them.

I didnt seem to have swirls until I waxed my truck by hand. But I wax in circular motions so unfortunately, I think I Created them. I just want them gone. It looks like crap on a black truck. 8 hours doesn't sound too thrilling though. Going to be a long weekend me thinks  Soon as I figure out which product to get. Any instructions on using claybar so I dont make it worse?

Yea man, I clayed and its super super easy. Get a clay kit from any basic auto parts store. I cut the bar in half to make it easy to work wiht and used a half for each side. The kit is gonna come wiht a bottle of detailing spray or "lube". Spray the lube in the area you intend to clay.

Get the area good and wet and run the clay bar over the area until you reach the desired result. It took me aobut 3 hours to clay my 94, but I had 11 years of road grime and sun damage. Newer trucks should turn out nice much quicker. As the clay bar becomes contaminated manipulate the bar so that a clean surface can be used. If for any reason you drop the clay, the part that hit the ground is now worthless. Cut that section off and continue.

You won't be able to keep your hands off your car after you finish :driving:

After I clayed I polished and waxed, but I was sure to go in a motion that I didn't think would leave swirls. IT looked amazing at night and in shade, but not so great in sun. If you invest in any of the products the guys mentioned above please PM me and let me know how it works. This is a problem that is plaguing me as well. I'm about to research some of that stuff.

Hope this helps.

I always thought you were supposed to wax in a ciruclar motion. But if thats what causes swirls, what other way can you go?

heh exactly. I think thats why the use of an orbital buffer is important. It does a better job of waxing smoothly. Thats the only thing I can think of. Anyone else?

I'm not sure that waxing is whats causeing the swirl though. Maybe poor wash job? Poor soap? Anyone?

I dunno I wash the work trucks all the time. And I use mcquiers, so I dont think its the soap. ANd i dont think the job is bad. Ive never used a buffer. Kind of worried bout burning the paint since Ive never done it before hehe.

Yea...that is exactly my fear as well. I think the poorboys products I mentioned above are made to use without buffer. I think thats my leading canidate right now. RyanbabZ71 showed that too me and he suggests the light swirl remover. Thats probably the route I'm gonna go.

Zaino products are AWESOME... IMO the best there is...  Just buy the start up kit..

agreed..... Zaino al the way!!

also go to their website and read all about washing waxing and drying...

my guess is the rag/s you used is the cause of the swirl marks.. but it just my guess.

good luck!

(my 03 monte was black and Zaino was thee BEST!! I spent a day and no swirls as well as bugs and dirt just fell off the car with a rinse only!! this is no joke.
