Changing filter between oil changes

Recommended Posts

So I have decided I will be using a new method to change my oil. I will stick with the OLM and continue to run Mobil 1. I will change the filter at 50% of the OLM. This due to my understanding that the WIX filters I use last for about 5 or 6K miles. This would put me at changing the filter every 4K or so.

For those of you that do this or something similar to it, hwo much oil do you lose in the process? Do you lose what is in the filter, a quart, the whole 6 quarts...How much roughly? Thanks

Cameron, I do something similar but I do not have a OLM just a time to change light.

I use Amsoil 5W 30 and CARQUEST filters (Wix). My wife does not put a lot of miles on the truck so I change at 3 month intervals. I change the oil and filter one time and the filter only the next time. The oil is completely changed every 6 months and it would typically have 3,000 miles on it at that time. This is probably overkill but I consider it cheap insurance.

I loose apprx 20 oz when changing. I have yet to loose an entire qt.

Just be careful not to overfill your crankcase. That is worse than running it a little low.

If you run oil analysis you will see that running Amsoil at 25-30K miles is fine changing filters every 15K miles.

Last time I did oil analysis the oil had 35K miles on it and it tested well within acceptable parameters of viscoisty, lubricity and amount of metals. Once you understand this and the true benefit of synthetic oils (namely drain interval) over dino you will see how much money you can save as well as time with extended drain intervals.

Amsoils new EA filters are rated for 25K miles.

It is throwing away money to change amsoil every 6K miles.

I know I know I am crazy blah blah blah.......

Been using extended drain intervals with Amsoil for nearly 20 years on a variety of vehicles and have never had an oil related engine issue.

1988 Pontiac Bonneville with 225K miles run with 30K mile drain intervals and the engine ran as good as the day it was new.

Ok who are you referring to...me or C&A?

I already run full synthetic, Im just worried about the filter crapping out.

Cameron - as long as you are running a good quality filter and not humping garbage into your crankcase a filter will last the interval noted with the OLM.

I agree with Larry on the chage interval. I run M-1 full syn 5-30 and change my filter when the OLM indicates 0% oil life and top off the oil. I normally go about 3 or 4 cycles like this before a complete drain. Each cycle is around 7.5 K.

So you follow the OLM and then you only change your filter? Your oil stays in for 3-4 OLM intervals? Wow, far stretch from the 3K change thing lol. The furthest I have gone in the past is just following the OLM and then doing a complete oil change. So, I guess do not have to worry about the filter going bad before the OLM period?

I also change the filter only when the OLM counts to 0%. I change my Amsoil annually <15000 miles average. I use good filters, Pure 1, etc. Technology is great.

Everone that changes oil at 3000K needs to read about new technology in oil and engine emissions & engine management. Get your head out of the sand and do some research. Oil compounds and engine management has come a long way from the carburator.

If you care about slowing the use of foreign oil, use a synthetic and dont change it as often.
