1998 K1500 brakes

I'm in the middle of dealing for a 1998 K1500 W/T truck when the dealer calls and says it needs a new master cylinder and brake lines. Apparently it's been sitting for quite awhile. I'm just wondering ball park what something like that would cost. They're not wanting to fix it and I'm wanting them to knock the price of the job off what we're dealing for.

The dealer is now considering not selling it and taking to an auction even though we had a deal. Any advice out there?

Thanks,

Tim

I'm guessing that they're bluffing, and trying to get you to pay for it. I also wouldn't be totally surprised if the truck doesn't in fact need those items, and they are wanting a little more profit out of you.

That's just a guess though, based on some of my past dealing with dealerships.

agreed, if it's been sitting long enough to mess up the brakes (i'm gonna guess through hydroscopic damage) i would worry about more costly things like engine damage and such.

or more likely it's a Katrina truck. in that case run run like the wind.

drop the money and get your own carfax report. if in doubt

The problem is is that there isn't millions of K1500 W/T 4x4's out there or base model silverados with the 4.3L V6. This has actually happened to me three times. I show interest in one, call, make arrangements to pick up, and then they tell me they're going to go to auction with them. I even tracked a truck with carfax from one dealer who owned, tried to sell it, and then took it to auction only to have the truck show up at another dealer who's trying to sell it. The truck is still on the one guy's web site while it's on the current seller's web site. Get this. The current dealer who's got it is asking 10,900 for it! When it's also listed for sale on the previous dealer's site for 8,200. He couldn't sell it. No one wants these trucks but these dealers think they can get this kind of money out them. Here I want one in the worst way and they don't want to sell me one. I might as well go for a V8.

Believe it or not because I have owned both...the 4.3 will not be that much better on gas :banghead:

I'm not sure how much you want to spend, where you're at, or if you would be willing to drive a little to get your truck, but if you're wanting a bone stock 4.3 4x4 work truck, the dealer I bought mine from has one for $16,990. I'm sure there are other dealers out there who are ordering these bone stock, and selling them without a huge markup.

If you're interested, it's stock #T9681 at Butte GM in Butte, MT.

And like everything else in Montana, there's no sales tax on that truck, the only extra thing you have to pay is a $50 documentation fee :banghead:

Thanks for the info. I checked the web site. They actually have a 99 listed, too with 105,000 miles on it. The one I'm dealing for and going to buy now that they are fixing it is a 1998 with 74,000 miles. I like the pre-99 style better, but I'll keep it in mind. I live in Nebraska, so I think they were wanting to wait to see if I'm coming or not before they go ahead and fix it. I told them I'll make my final decision when I see it and drive it. Having a 3rd party mechanic up there check it out, too. I think I caught them just in time. Seems like they were ready to send it to an auction right before I contacted them.
