GM is going to debut a light duty diesel truck in 09

The only problem is, that at current fuel prices the diesel would have to priced around 1.5K more than the 5.3L truck to have a somewhat equal cost/benefit ratio after a 4 year ownership period (just some numbers I tossed in my calculator). A 3/4 ton diesel truck is about 6K more than a gas powered one... so.... would this even be worth it?

What do y'all think?

maybe i am mistaken but that article stated that the new light duty diesel will produc 360HP DEAR GOD

When folks calculate the return on investment for the additional ~$6k of cost for the diesel truck, they seldom include resale value in their calculation. After 100k miles and 5 years of life, a diesel truck is often worth $6k more than an identical used gas truck. And this doesn't consider fuel saved during that time period.

I think that Diesel durability and fuel economy will win many consumers. I am very interested in it.

Who designed this engine? It says GM introduced it, but is this a joint venture with someone or strictly a GM engine?

GM along with Isuzu designed the Duramax but its built in Dayton Oh. I doubt the 360 HP will stand because usually ths the gross HP before fuel economy & emissions are factored in.

The cost of the option is $6000 currently but the emissions add on for 2007 will bring it up to about $7-8000 and the LD 1500 has tighter emission to boot.

No, it says the Duramax produces 360 horsepower. Plus, all of the pickups 1500-3500 are light duty trucks. This new engine could be for the 2500-3500 trucks only, doesn't specify 1500.

reminds me of the middle 90's when they started to introduce the 1500hd with the 6.5L and the 2500 up were getting the turbo model.

normaly people willing to shuck out the extra $$ will shuck out the extra $$ for the 2500+ since it comes out to about 1500 difference. unles they add big $$ to the 2500 diesel.

Read it again, it says the new engine will "PRODUCE UP TO 360 HP". Later it says the Duramax also produces a maximum of 360 HP. I bet this new engine will be on a 1500 series truck. As far as payback time, if you are only keeping the truck for 4 years, why buy a diesel. My 1500 is 5 years old now, perfect shape and plan to keep it 3 more. I would definately consider the new engine in a 1500.
