Knock Sensor question....

I put a new GM longblock in my 94' Silvy about a year and half ago and it had a stumble at idle that I finally figured out that the valves were out of adjustment a little and I also put a new GM EGR and remidied the problem about 95%.

It runs good with the timing advanced a little but, drop it back to zero with the light and it seems a little retarded.

Now I was reading thru my Chiltons and it states "Warning"! Do not use silicon tape on the threads of the knock sensor and this may insulate the sensor.

It doesn't really elaborate much more than that.

My question is if the knock sensor retards in the event of a knock...would it not let it advance like it's supposed to since there may or may not be a signal since I did use the tape ?

Second question...

This is the original sensor and has 149,000 miles on it. Should I replace it with a GM knock sensor (this is what I was told) ?

And last but not least... Should I take out the junk Bosch O2 sensor and replace it with a GM sensor (was told that too) ?

 

It's a stock motor with a K&N drop in, Edelbrock TBI intake, Ti Tech headers and Edelbrock exhaust with Accel ignition.

I don't know about these older motors anymore, but I know on newer motors Bosch O2 sensors aren't that great.

 

As for your knock sensor, I'd recommend replacing it, but be careful not to overtorque it either. I believe they're only supposed to go to 11 ft-lbs or so, otherwise they're junked (went through 3 on my dad's truck before we were told this). I don't know really how they work though.
