First Oil Change

Reporting on the first oil change @ 880 miles on my

2007 Classic Silverado (5.3 L). Lots of good size

chunks of metal debris in the oil. The magnetic plug

caught a good amount of metal (first time I've ever

seen that). Inspected the oil filter, outside glittered

with debris. Inside had just a few scattered mid-side

chunks of engine debris. Other than that it looks like

the filter caught most of the particulate matter. If I

was to do it again, I'd have changed the filter a bit

sooner. A little trivia. The 2007 Classic uses the new

engine block, or at least it uses the new filter which

can not be found at Wall Mart.

I have a 07 Silver with about 1450 miles on it, going to change the oil this weekend. I had a hard time finding a filter for it also. I went to the Dealer and got the PF48 filter for 4.95. It seems the 07 4.8 have different threads on the filter and many people do not have it in yet. I plan on using Castrol 5w-30 GTX. I also plan on switching to Synthetic after 5k miles or so. I am bebating to go to Mobil 1, Amsoil, or Royal purple.

I don't think you'll have any problems, It is recommended to do the first change by 1,000 miles anyway.

I never did understand why they change the filters like they do. I guess it makes to much sense too.

 

I still like the filters of old, nice and big. I know that a big filter probably isn't needed with newer engine building technology but it just makes me feel better knowing there is a nice sized filter on there.

Buy a filter remote kit that uses a big one.

Here goes an attemp at a few pics.

 

Here's the oil filter, top is inner (filtered), bottom

is outer (unfiltered). The glitter are pieces of metal:

 

 

Here's the rear differential cover magnet which caught numerous metal pieces.

What's that long wire all about?

 

 

A sample of particles in the rear diff. fluid not picked up by the magnet.

 

 

Other than those pieces found in the rear diff, the fluid appeared glitter

free. So overall the magnet did a pretty good job. It is still comforting

to have that crap out of there.

 

Off topic, here are EMF ratings for some trucks. Drive a Tundra if

you want to get fried. Drive a Silverado and be happy.

I was not aware that you could buy a real Oil Filter at Wal Mart.

 

It is your truck after all and you are either making the paymetns or have paid for it and you can do as you please with it. However, I would beg you not to use a F**M or other cheapo filter. There are many good ones out there. I would suggest you stay with AC, or a Wix supplied filter such as CARQUEST.

What's up with the seemingly-pessimistic comments about buying stuff at Walmart? Okay, maybe the second quote wasn't meant to bash Walmart but it clearly implied that Walmart doesn't necessarily carry quality stuff--in this case, "real" oil filters...but the first quote is definitely anti-Walmart. I mean, sure there is stuff I wouldn't necessarily buy at Walmart but c'mon--for someone to imply that he wouldn't buy anything at all at Walmart? Not every single thing sold at Walmart is necessarily "Made In China"-type cr*p--I buy 5-gallon jugs of Mobil-1 synthetic motor oil at Walmart because they have it cheaper than just about any other store where I live (I won't get into any discussion over which syn oil is better, as it has nothing to do with the point I'm making).

I hope the '07 Silverado Classic with the 4.3L doesn't have the same issue.

 

Mine has close to 600 miles on it. I was debating on waiting until next weekend to have the oil changed or should I do it this weekend?

Got my oil changed at 974 miles on Tuesday.

 

The oil change place didn't alert me to any issues with metal particles.

I've used Wal-Mart 10w-30 Full Synthetic(made by Warren Performance Products) ever since Pennzoil Performax was discontinued. You cannot beat this oil for lubrication at any price. It has been used in my 1993 Silverado for most of it's 227,000 miles. The truck will still pass an emissions test(threadmill load type) with ease. I don't "baby" this truck either. A typical oil change for me is done anywhere between 7,000-15,000 miles. No joke either!

 

I also used to use the "Supertech" filters which are made by Champion labs. Champion labs makes the filters for AC-DELCO,STP,AUTOZONE,BOSCH etc.

I quit using them because several months ago Champion went to what they call an "eco-core" design. They may work just fine, but I am still old school when it comes to oil filters. I now use either Purolator or NAPA(WIX). The BOSCH line of filters is the old "supertech" line but at three times the price.

I need to correct these statements. Apparently within the last few months BOSCH has bought PUROLATOR and now all BOSCH filters are rebadged PUROLATORS. It hard to stick with one brand of autoparts anymore, because you never know what you're gonna get.
