Aluminum Block or Cast Iron Block?

To be a little more helpful, a cast iron block is usually painted black to keep it from rusting. An aluminum block typically isn't painted and will be greyish in color.

A simple test is to see if a magnet will stick to it or not. If it will, you've got an Iron block. Chances are you do though, since you have a 2000, unless this is not on your truck.

I have a 2007 6.0 (see tag) and it is an aluiminum block. Info seems to be scarce on this engine, can anyone point me in the right direction to some good tech info? or maybe fill me in? I'm a reformed Dodgeboy, and need all the help I can get

MilkTruck,You sure you have the Gen IV "LY6" 6-liter? I didn't think GM was using any Gen IV engines in the "Classics".

At least all the '07 "Classic" HD trucks we're still getting in at the dealership have the Gen III "LQ4" Iron-Block 6-liter in them (Unless they ordered the optional 8.1 or DMAX) As a matter of fact all the '07 classic trucks were getting have Gen III engines in them.

And as far as I know the "LY6" 6-liter is a cast-iron block,not aluminum.The "L76" 6-liter is an aluminum block engine.

I can e-mail you a copy of your build sheet if you want,Just PM me your VIN and e-mail address.
