to wine, but my burb has to go back to the dealer again for the shaft rattle on the steering shaft. What can we do ? can we tap a grease fiting into it and pump grease every month. Why hasnt GM found a way to fix a simple thing ?

I sent a complaint to the NHSTA. I then called them up to see how many other people have complained about the streeing shaft under :fume: which I sent mine as and the answer was 1 me. So then I asked what about under chevrolet and it was 2 or 3 so as you can see it must not be that big of a problem if only 3 or 4 of us complained out of the millions and millons of 2000 to 2005 trucks sold. :)

Simple fix....turn up the radio  :chevy:

Now that's just dumb :)

Once mine does it again, since it's out of warranty, I'll d**n well figure out a way to grease it...that's just BS :fume:

Mine had a little clunk to it, not too bad.

Now my dad's 02 Sierra...Jesus Christ...it feels like there's a one-man band in there playing la cuca rotcha on the pitman arms.

My dad had these few ideas...

1.) Tap a spot weld on where it collapses (if you can picture this). When you wanna take out the shaft, grind off the tap.

2.) Drill a hole in the shaft...where its loose. Weld a bolt on there to raise it up, and in the bolt, install a grease tap (to raise it up out of the shaft). That way you can grease the hell out of it, and the heat from the engine thins the grease, and flows it through the shaft.

I think #2 is a d**n good idea!

Complaints to the NHTSA is not necessarily an indication of how widespread the concern is. After all you can find the TSBs on this problem on the NHTSA site for at least five years running. Some are willing to live with it and that is certainly their choice. Others have actually had their trucks bought back through the lemon law. But GM has identified this as a problem by offering repairs for it. Thus consumers have an expectation it should be resolved.

I would also imagine those trucks owned by businesses and used mostly for work by employees are not complained about after a while-they get the job done and it's not dangerous.

Deep Blue,

Is there a fix for this. I haven't noticed this on my 01 Sierra, but just curious.

Koinz I've heard that GM was coming out with yet another intermediate shaft by year's end-perhaps it's the one they are putting in the GMT 900s. Supposedly none of the GMT 900 SUVs have had this concern. If that is the case there may not be enough supply for repairing GMT 800s until they have sufficient GMT 900s out to dealerships. That would probably coincide with the end of this year or early next year. In the meantime we should probably keep putting pressure on GM for a resolution. If they want us to keep lubricating the part, this should be outlined in the maintenance schedule in the owners manual so we could at least anticipate this during the purchase of the truck.
