Halogen Backup Lamps

I could use some more light when backing out of our driveway, but I don't want to install any extra lights on the back of the truck.  Has anyone found a cheap source for 1156 halogen lamps to replace the standard lamps in the backup lights?  The halogen lamps are 50 watts compared to the 27 watt standard lamps.  The halogen lamps should draw 4.1 amps which shouldn't be too much for the existing wiring.  I don't believe the backup lights are usually lite longer than a minute or so, so I don't believe that there will be any fixture overheating (melting) problem.

Update on the Halogen Backup Lamps:

I installed the 3156 halogen lamps in the backup lamp holders tonight that I ordered from Auto Accessories.  They make a huge difference!  They claim that the halogen lamps are 2 1/2 times brighter than the stock lamps and I believe them.  The instructions do caution against having the backup lights on for more than several minutes because of the increased heat generated by the halogen bulbs.  That's understandable.

   I'm pleased!   :D

I am having a hard time finding the halogen backup lamps you are talking about. I went to Car Quest, Napa and Schucks, every place I went to they said that they have never heard of them before. I new the part number but all I could find is the 3157 which is not halogen.

Could you maybe include a link to a site that has them? I tried to goto www.autoaccessories.com and their website was down.

What company makes them?

Thanks for any help.

Sure!

The company's name is Automotive Accessories Connection and their website is: www.accessconnect.com/blueand.htm   This will take you to their blub listings.  The 3156 bulb is compatable with 3157, 3056 and 3057.  Their part number is 20107 and their price is $14.95 for two bulbs.  The shipping was about $5.00 so the total was about twenty bucks.  I got them in a few days from ordering.  I've placed several orders with these people and have always been pleased.

Well I finally got around to installing my 50w halogen backup lights this weekend. Easy to do...

I put the left(driver side) in first and cranked the engine, with emergency brake on I put it in R got out to look and compare brightness, well to my dismay, I couldn't tell any difference. I had my wife come out and looksee. Not telling her which one I had done first. She could not see a difference either. I was looking for that 2x brighter difference and I'm a littel disapointed.

I'm going to call the mfg Designtech out of Richmond VA to see if all is right.

You may want to still conside a pair of under bumper 55's - they are cheap and easy to install - get the kind with the relay  so that you dont have to worry about length of operating time - you also might want to have an override to use them for hitch hookup.

some of us are hoping jpendlum will provide a complete kit.

I've installed a pair from performance products a few weeks ago, they are brighter, but I don't know about 2-1/2 times brighter.  Have a hard time because of the rear tinted window on the cab and the rear tinted window on the shell, looking through two tinted windows.  I still may install additional lights whenever I see some I like and have time to install.
