welding w/booster cables and 12V battery?

I read in a co-workers 4-wheeling magazine about wiring up two 12volt batteries, hooking them up to booster cables and welding this way.

I read that too. I'd like to see the "proper" way to do this, if there is such a thing. I'd definatley tear something up, either me or the test subject. (Likely to be the wifes Ford.)

Actually, we did that in shop class. Hooked up a couple of batteries, straightened out a coat hanger, and went to it. The weld wasnt' the strongest or prettiest, but it worked. It would get you home if it had to.
