MY transfer case is leaking from where the drive shaft connects to it. I've already had a couple of shops tell me that they'll have to take the whole case out to fix it, and even then it might run up to $1000.00????

Does anyone have any ideas about if this is something you have to have a mechanic fix??

I'm looking for some detailed info, as I really don't have too much cash...

thanks for any help

Im not totally familiar with the transfer case on your truck......but every 4x4 I have had, has always had seal at the back of the transfer case, its actually in the tail stock......and this is where the yoke on the front of the drive shaft slides through into the case.........if its leaking there, then could be just your tailstock seal......and the transfer case does not have to be removed to replace that........ :chevy:

It depends on what driveshaft you're referring to. If it's the rear drive shaft, then no, it doesn't have to be removed to repair your leak. If it's the front drive shaft, then I can see it needing to be removed since that's not a slip yolk.

how hard is that to do? i have the same leak and it slings crap all over the bottom of my truck. how much does that seal cost?

If its the tailstock seal you are referring to.....then its dead easy. Remove your driveshaft.......then remove the seal carefully......I use a small flat screwdriver and hammer and work my way around the seal......carefull not to damage the tailstock......once its out, put the new one back in, make sure its seated nicely......and put your driveshaft back in.........you should be able to get the seal from any auto parts store......I paid $30.00 for mine........... :)
