Differential fluid change

For 2005 Yukon XL 1500, what is the rear differential fluid capacity and fill level. Is it level with the fill hole or about 1/2" below ?

 

Nowhere in the owner manual does it mention what the fill level or capacity is.

 

Also how about for the front differential ?

The rear diff should be about 10 - 40 mm below the fill plug. It takes a little more than 2 quarts, as you will notice in Ryan's post where it states 2.1 quarts. There should be a tag above the fill plug telling you how full to fill it and what kind of oil to use. You should be using synthentic oil.

 

To check the fluid level I use a 6" piece of wire from a coat hanger that I placed a 90 degree bend in. Then I measured 10mm from the bend on one side and marked it. Then I stick the marked end into the fill plug and measure the oil level.

 

This is for my silverado but I assume it is similar?

an allen wrench works good to check the level too

my was way low when I did it. like a full qt. no damage done.

I'd venture to say a little lower is better than oil pouring out of the hole, like I usually do.

3.8 liters is about 4 quarts, not 3.25 quarts.

Is there any additive necessary when using Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic. It is a locking differential ?
