4.8L v8 Gas Mileage?

I have just passed 10K on mine (07 classic crew cab) and with 50 mile urban commute and several cross state trips, the worst tank was 16.9 MPG the best has been 19.8 (today mostly highway @ 75mph) . most have been around 17.8-18.2

sweet, so according to auto websites and enthusiast forums, chevy's 4.8L gets 2mpg better than fords 4.6L/5.4L

do these sound correct? And to those who have the 4.8L v8 - does it have enough power for your needs?

I'm happy with it, one of my salesman has an F150 Crew Cab with 4.6 and he says his a dog compared to my 4.8. His mileage has been worse too.

what about the 5.3L v8 chevy offers...according to review and the website it gets the same EPA mileage...and i know someone witha 5.3L and they avg 18mpg in the city...

My 4.8 has over 100,000 miles on it and still gets 20 mpg driving back and forth to work(20 miles each way, 12 miles of freeway). Of course the rear end gearing in this thing has me hitting 1700-1800 at 65 mph. It gets the same mileage as my wifes' 4 door Tacoma PreRunner. I can't imagine the 5.3 would do much worse and has a few more ponies...

The website says that the 4.8L v8 will get 16mpg city and 21mpg highway...is this accurate?

I have a 2006 Crew cab with the 5.3L V8 and On the highway I average 18mpg but I have seen it as high as 19-20 on long runs, and in the city I average 14-15mpg I would get the 5.3 and get a little more power for a couple of mpg. Of course this all depends on how heavy your foot is.

Everyone with the new F-150 is lucky to break 13 mpg overall. I did have a buddy with a 99 f-150 get 20 on a long trip. Don't determine a truck on its mpg rating, the gm's happen to get better than dodge or the fords from what i have seen. Go with the 5.3L. :D

I've owned all three brands. I can tell you for certain that the GM fullsize truck will average 3-4 miles per gallon more than the Fords or Dodges. 3-4 miles per gallon doesn't sound like much, but multiplied over 26 gallons for each tank, it adds up quick during a year.

CapnDean gets between 18 - 20 each tank. I drive 14 miles each way to work & back. 7 miles of the trip are interstate @75 mph.

 

I have almost 90K on the truck (2001 ext cab 2WD 4.8L). To date I have not changed the plugs.

 

I am happy with the performance and plan to tune it up when I notice a drop.

My last truck that I recently traded was a 2005 GMC Sierra Ext Cab 4x4 with the 4.8L. My new truck is a 2006 GMC Sierra Ext Cab 4x4 with a 5.3. I get the exact same mileage with my 5.3 that I got with the 4.8 but the power is noticeable different. I differed with a couple fellas in the past about the 4.8 vs. 5.3 mileage but can now tell you from experience that they're identical. The biggest difference I see is when I'm in the hills...the 5.3 pulls up the hills alot easier without the tranny having to shift a gear to maintain speed. The 4.8 is a good motor but for the difference in power, I'll take the 5.3 any day.

 

P.S. I was getting 18-19 with the 4.8 and get the same with the 5.3 in mixed driving and can easily do 20 on the highway staying at crusing speed (60 mph). My mileage did go down in the winter due to idling but I still get 17 in mixed driving.

after that comment, i'd love to get the 5.3 now...but I can get the 4.8L cheaper because the LT1 package comes with the 4.8 and it's like 1k to add the 5.3L but we'll see :)

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
