4x4 Buttons Flashing

Recommended Posts

When I try and put my truck into 4Hi or Lo or Auto Trac the light just flashes and eventually returns back to the solid light on the 2Hi. I can hear a click in the buttons when I push them but thats about it. Any ideas what the problem may be? I have a 2000 1500 Ext Cab with a 6 in lift.

There was some sort of service notice on the switch that wasn't a full recall. I had a 2000 Chevy Z71 and mine did the same thing. Replace the switch and it will work fine. From what I recall, it wasn't too expensive to take it into the dealer. Good luck.

I have read that the solder joints where the pins go into the circuit board on the switch assembly can be cracked/bad. You could take a look and maybe resolder them instead of having to buy a new switch.

Right on!. Even if you only have minimal soldering experience, it is an easy fix. All you really need to do is take the switch apart and apply the soldering iron to each joint to re-liquefy the solder and then remove. I found quite a few cold solder joints and they were easy to spot. Any solder with a really dull finish should be re-hit with the iron. I give a person with no soldering experience a 90% chance of fixing.

So even if I hear an audble click coming from the buttons in the dash it might still be the connection? So where can I get the part to replace it online?

havent checked the connectons yet. I tried it today and heard the transfer case click in when I hit the buttons. Is it the acctuator foe the front axle that is bad then?

Until you check/fix the switch, you won't be able to tell. It could be either but given the massive number of problems with the switch, that would be my first fix.

All right I just replaced the switch and it still flashes when i try and put it in 4wheel. I can hear the transfer case shifting but the lights still flash. What should i replace now? I am thinking the actuator.

My 06 GMC Sierra did the same thing with 528 miles on it. The dealer fixed it, after reprogramming the switch, and changing the encoder motor, the culprit was a bad connection at the fuse block. Go figure. Now with 10K miles, no problems.

i noticed that when I hit the button to 4hi it almost sounds like the t-case motor doesnt shift very far and it doesnt clunk into place like it does in 4lo. So am I in need of a motor and front acctuator?
