fuel sensor replacement?

I have a stock 2001 Duramax 2500 HD diesel and have found that the fuel level sensor that is inside the fuel tank is bad. When my gage reads about 1/2 tank the gage pegs empty and the low fuel light comes on, then when I fill the tank everything goes back to normal, intil is use enough fuel to get the gage back to 1/2 and then it starts over again. My question is, If a shadetree mechanic tackles this task by themself, would it be easier to drop the fuel tank or raise the truck bed to get at this sensor that is inside the tank?? Pro's and Con's either way?

i have an 03 duramax, have someone with a scanner make sure it is the sender in tank first, they can check fuel percentage then go an put some in it an see if it changes. i did this an it's the gauge, an they want $400 to rebuild gauge. jack ps just a thought

See if you can add some diesel conditioner/injector cleaner...I know for gas motors everyone recommends Chevron Techron, but not sure what to use with diesels (sea foam maybe?)....it's a helluva lot cheaper to try that for a few tanks rather than replace the sender.

When I did the sender on my K1500, I just removed the bed (6 bolts) and moved it back to access the tank and sender....I'd recommend that 10x over dropping the tank.

I just replaced the fuel pump module in my 1500 extra cab. Pulled 8 bolts, 3 screws on the filler pipe and 2 tail light connectors. Invited 3 neighbors over and set the bed on 2x4s and sawhorses. Had to lift it about 18 inches straight up to clear the bumber and tires before moving laterally. Way easier than dropping the tank.
