hey everyone i have a question i know i guy with an 03 avalanche and he thinks it will tow more then my truck for whatever reason. he thinks it will (handle the weight better) my question is he has an 03 with a 5.3L v8 what gears come with this truck. he has the same engine tranny setup as me but from what i understand his truck is on the sub. platform and mine runs with the tahoe? i have a 5.3 and 3.73s i see no reason that a heavier avalanche with big rims will out tow my truck its sounds like B.S. if anything it wouldnt be able to stop as fast and the onlything he has the advantage on is that he could have 4.10s which i doubt but its possible right? i also am chipped with bully dog and have an extended cab thanks for all opinions

If he has 4.10 gears on that Avalanche, it must be a 4x4 model . If he has oversize tires/rims on it, then he has effectively lowered the gear ratio to 3.73 or less (less towing capability because of less torque). If he has 3.73 gears to begin with, with oversize tires he has limited his towing capability over the same vehicle with stock tires/rims.

Extra size and weight of the tow vehicle helps as far as towed load stability is concerned, but it lowers the towing capacity of the vehicle. This is why 2WD trucks with the same engine/gear ratio have higher tow rating than 4X4 trucks and regular cab 2WD trucks which are the lightest will have the highest tow ratings. Check any truck towing guide and see for yourself.

i believe that an 03 Avalanche came with standard 3.42 gears in the 2WD version , and 3.73 gears in the 4WD version. 3.73s were optional on a 2WD, and 4.10s on a 4WD.

That's the goofiest argument I have ever heard. They're both the same truck but with different body slapped over the frame.
