what is the proceedure in removing the bed of 2000 GMC extended cab so I can replace the sending unit in the fuel tank. Does it have to come all the way off or just slide it back a little? Where does the wire harness come apart ? Is a written proceedure or diagram?

Not really a written procedure, but it's one I don't like to do without a lift or at least an engine hoist. Basically you unbolt the bed from the frame, disconnect the wires to the lights, and lift...some say you can get away with only lifting the driver's side, but I'd recommend taking the whole thing off for safety's sake.

Make sure you unhook the gas filler screws & ground and just get two friends to lift & slide the box back to clear the meter unit.

Also, you need to unbolt the rear fender rods that bolt to the bed. Located around the rear wheel.

The bed only has to be moved back about 18" - 24", but there is around 8 bed bolts, the ground strap at the filler neck, the filler neck screws at the gas door, and unplug the taillights at the frame. Easiest way is to take a couple heavy ratchet straps or chains diagonally across the bed tying them in at the bottom loops in the corners, and lifting with an engine hoist. Make sure you take the tailgate off first and put a couple blankets on the rear bumper so that you don't scratch or damage the bed. Last year I replaced mine in about 30 min with some help from a friend of mine. You can actually get the AC Delco Fuel Sending Unit Card only on Ebay. Mine was $35.00 shipping and all. Search for "NEW GM FUEL LEVEL SENSOR" it will show up in EBAY Stores.

 

Warning: With this vehicle, all wiring must be connected to check the pump and gauge operation. Failure to reconnect the grounding strap at the fuel door and reconnect the taillight connector will not let the fuel pump ground, which will not let the pump or sending unit to work.
