6-speed transmission

Does anyone know when the 6-speed automatic will be offered for half-ton Silverado/Sierra with 5.3L and 6.0L motors? It's odd that GM didn't include this from the launch.

Thanks!

Its only available in the all wheel drive versions now but will be available in 2008 models.

GM is ramping up production after building a new building at the Toledo OH plant.

Will it be standard on the silverado, or will it be an option?

Standard replacement for the 4L60/65E depending on production volume.

Thanks for the info. That sure makes it a tough decision on whether to buy now or wait until 2008 for the 6 speed. Unfortunately, I need something for towing this summer.

The HD models will be available right from the start with the 6 speed 6.0L motor very soon. It's an option to consider especially if you are doing lots of towing. By summer there should be a few on lots.

1500 up to 6.2L get the 6L80E & the 2500 up get the 6L90E up to 6.6L.

Do you have a source for this I would like to read some more into it. I thought there was a 6l60E in the line-up somewhere.....

What's everyones thoughts about all these gears? I saw a commercial the other day for a 8 speed automatic transmission. 8 freakin' gears! What is that really necessary for? F1 cars use 7 gears, but they also run way over 200 mph and accelerate like bullets.

I'm not quiet sure what I think about 6 speed trannys in the trucks just yet. I believe they are avail in the Denalis right? Are there any GMT-900 Denali owners that would like to talk about performance and feel of the 6 speed? I would think that it would do A LOT of hunting and pecking to find the right gear.

I would have liked my new truck to have a 6-speed, but its not a deal breaker. I'm not going to run out and buy a Yoda just because its tranny has 2 extra cogs. My Silverado will have a greater payload and towing capacity, and gets better EPA mileage than the Tundra. Would it have been nice? Yeah, but not necessary. I'll get the 6-speed when I replace this one in 3 or 4 years.

The new Denali trucks won't be out until april, but I believe the tranny is currently available in the Denali SUV's and the Caddy's.

Personally, I have NO problems with the 4 speed. I actually like it. I travel a lot and it only shifts out of 4th to go up STEEP hills and when I hit the gas to pass. I'm not sure what a 6 speed would do? Does it need to drop to 4th to get up hills and pass?

We also have an 05 Tacoma with an auto 5 speed, it has to drop to 3rd to go up steep hills and "hunts" between 4th and 5th on minor grades. Kind of annoying.

I'm not sure how the 5.3L and 6.0L motors will perform with the 6 speed. As it is now, they make their power and torque in the higher rpm bands, and with the 4 speeds, the engines wind higher before shifting. Unless you manually shift the 6 speed, it seems to me like it would shift before the engine reached it's optimum power band.

The 6 speed would be perfect for the Tundra because it makes its power in the low RPM range.

That's why I was wondering if the "lower powered" engines will keep the 4 speed or maybe go to a 5 speed auto?

I also believe GM should offer the 6 speed manual with the 5.3 and 6.0L trucks, but that's just my opinion :loser:
