New Hood Feature

Stopped off at large Chevrolet dealer to look at new HD's on lot. No crewcabs as expected but all of the trucks on the lot, from basic WT package to LT2 ext. cab, had two plastic semi-louvered air intake pieces at the toe of the hood/window intersection. They were at the corners of the hood.

Are they all going to have this? I really have not seen that in the review pictures or even read about it for that matter and looked rather odd. Almost something from the 80's era muscle cars for air intake. I thought it detracted from the trucks looks. :flag:

Pretty sure they all are going to have them. The engine vents seem to be a new trend in heavy duty trucks, the new Ford Super Duty has them on the fender.

Yes, they will all have them.

In the 2007 Accessories catalog you can buy chrome replacements for them:

Chrome Louvers

Pop the hood on these HD's and you will find that these "intake" grills do nothing. The hood is solid from the back to the front. On an interesting note, the HD Sierra's that I have seen, do not have them.

Loos like the GMC's are once again going to get the cleaner, higher end look over the Chevy's. Not that I mind the Chevy look, the GMC's have always looked cleaner in my opinion.

The 07 Escy's have a front quarter panel louver also. As far as function goes? I don't think GM or Ford uses them for anything other than cosmetics. Remember in the 80's when all high trim level trucks had an aluminum or chrome tailgate trim piece? I'm sure it is just a sign of the times. I noticed on the Chevy's they have moved the "Duramax/Allison" badge up to the hood, just in front of the louver. The GMC's remain on the door. I like it where everyone can see what you have under the hood. Maybe they are going for more "brand individuality".

Anyone know about RPO LPO? This is from the GM of Canada website:

Hood Louvers (LPO) $310

Parts shipped separately. Dealer installed.

Are these the standard louver or chrome parts? The above link doesn't work.

How are the louvers attached? Pushnuts or palnuts? I'm thinking that when I get my next truck & if it has the louvers (I'll be in the market for a 2011) I'll remove them & have them painted to match the body colour.

The Tundra has had that fake air intake in the middle of the hood for a while which makes me laugh.

So when can we expect the chrome gas cap cover, chrome window vents, chrome bug deflectors, and chrome bed rail covers on all model trucks from work truck to top end?

Toyotas make me laugh in general and the people that drive them. My loser neighbor who lives down the road has that fake intake on his POS toyota suv. If you are gonna have an intake on a hood, at least make it functional. I mean how hard would it have been for toyota to cut a hole through one of my used soda cans that were recycled to make a toyota in the first place?

Reminds me of when they brought the 1st 2 GMT900s into our plant. A Chev & a GMC. 1 of the "know-it-alls" from Detroit was saying that the "low spot" in the middle of the GMC would allow them to add a hood scoop in the future. He seemed quite pleased about that.

WTF!!!!

How is that going to help the truck's performance or durability? What a waste of design & engineering resources.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
