Im at 53,000 miles and Have a major issue.

I was trying to post a new topic but Im too new i guess.

I have a 2004 silverado. The brakes are staying on all the time, enought o keep the truck from moving in gear. It was comming and going but today its been on all day. got to take it in but wondering if anyone has heard of this or knows how to fix it.

Does it need to be bleed or somthing? what kind of brake fluid do you use? how do you change it?

thank you for anyhelp

Changed the rear pads at 60K; front pads are still the original and were just measured at 10/32" and 9/32" with 65K.

This is a 2004 Tahoe Z-71.

247,000 miles on my '99 GMC. The front pads are ridiculously long-lasting. The rears were changed some time ago because of the parking brake problem.

sounds like your caliper slide pins are seized, that it to your favorite shop and get check out before you get in an accident.

Yeah, ridiculous is right. I keep thinkin they are going to wear out, but then I get another 10,000 out of them. I can really tell the difference between these ceramic pads vs regular pads. Its seems like the ceramic pads don't grip the rotors quite as well as regular ones do.. Not that I'm complaining or anything. I really like the low dust and the amount of miles I am getting out of these. By the way, do you guys have a blue material on the back of your pads? You can see it when you look through your wheels. Do the replacements have this? I know its kind of stupid, but I notice it when cleaning my wheels and think it looks cool...

got about 70,000 miles on my '02...changed the rear brakes at about 65,000...front ones look new still. Now if I can just get my parking brake to work well I will be happy.

I have 131,000 miles on front and back. They just will not wear out, and I stop as hard as I take off!! I heard that on the NBS in 99 and 00 they used a special never wear out pads just to see if they could make them last as long as the truck.

Sticking Brakes: Some Ideas

1. fellow might be right about caliper pins being sticky, also check the caliper slide. you may find where the caliper has worn a stop groove into the slide and is stuck on it.

2. Old brake fluid may contaminate the caliper piston and it may be sticking. A complete brake system flush is required on all vehicles with ABS every 3 years or so, ABS works well with clean fluid and costs a lot of money to fix when dirty fluid contaminates it. Gallon of brake fluid for flush, $ 12.50. New ABS system $ 1500.00. A flush at a shop is only around a $ 50.00 charge.

3. If brakes apply well but will not release it may be the rubber brake hose rotting.

A rotting brake hose will operate under pressure when the brakes are applied and colapse when pressure is released causing your brake to stick.

Please pass on your solution, it may be something other than these ideas.

2002 uses DOT 3, check the Brake Cylinder Cap on your 2004, it should indicate your fluid type.

3. If brakes apply well but will not release it may be the rubber brake hose rotting. There is a rubber brake hose from the frame to the brake at all four tires. If one is bad they are all bad, rubber ages with time and conditions.

Odds are they were all exposed the same time and conditions.

A rotting brake hose will operate under pressure when the brakes are applied and colapse when pressure is released causing your brake to stick.

This type issue is usually one wheel sticking only and should have made the vehicle pull to one side while driving. One brake disc may be cooked from this, look for blueing of the rotor.

4. Are you sure it is not the rear differential locking up?

5. My 2001 Denali 6.0L and 3.42 gears had similar symptoms when the Tranny went out at 59,000 miles, a 4L60E HD. The valve body was directing fluid into reverse and Drive at the same time. You would hit the gas and for all the world it felt like the brakes were on then it would release and drive normally. This started while on a trip and the tranny went out the day after I got home. Felt fine while driving, only showed up after a stop. Good thing, trip home was 450 miles.
