Dual Exhaust

So today I went to a couple of big name muffler shops to get a price quote for a catback dual exhaust. One place said $470 before tax, and they would use a Flowmaster Super 40. The other said $375 without tips, and $475 with, and they would use whatever muffler I want. A third place I went to a while ago said something over $500. I've seen on here that some guys ran true duals for under $400, and others went the catback route for under $300. Should I look into some private owned places, as opposed to a big chain?

Also, I've been having a hard time deciding what muffler to get. I like the sound of the Super 40, but I've heard some bad things about their longevity. I want it as loud as I can without sacrificing anything tone wise. Maybe Magnaflow? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try some smaller shops. most places like to discourage people from getting duals so they raise the price. you could just get a y pipe and dual it out the back.

As long as the pipes are narrow enough or if he's making enough power it won't matter. A single exhaust with dual exits would probably be the better option if the engine is near stock. Not enough power is being made to need that much exit room and dual pipes will have more gas to wall friction than a fat single.

In reality what a good exhaust gives is high exhaust gas velocity. Backpressure is only a partially correct way of describing this because what you want is a tight enough exhaust to force the gas to exit at the highest velocity possible without choking the flow (cross section of the pipe physically limits the flow rate).

To give you an idea, I had a true dual system installed, they connected to my new headers, installed 2 high flow cats, crossover, 2 50 series FlowMasters and SS tips. $600.

Before this system, I had a single 40 series, single in dual out installed with chrome tips for $350.

I just bought a Cat back Flowmaster system off Ebay for 373. Single muffler with dual tailpipes. I have to install, but that's no big deal.

I wouldnt expect to pay anything less than what you are finding unless you have some really good luck. No place around here will do an exhaust for under 4 and thats without the tips. I looked into flowmaster cuz I had that on my last truck. It didnt even last 2 years so I went with magnaflow this time around. Ordered the kit online, and the cheapest I found for that was I think 510 or something like that. But the trade-off is you get stainless steel guaranteed for life. Its a big expense up front, but if it lasts forever unlike my flowmaster did, I'd go with it. Just my 2 cents....good luck

You basically get what you pay for, but it is good to know some flow dynamics. When you double the size of a pipe, you quadruple the volume flow... so less restriction and easier exhaust, but that means the input has to adjusted or it is just wasted. May require jetting adjustments or the like. Happy motoring.

JBA offers headers and exhaust for the 4.8L applications might be worth checking out although I dont recommend large diameter piping on a dual tailpipe exhaust system - essencially if you go to big on the size you will reduce back pressure to much and loose your bottom end power
