How Many Miles Have You Put On A Gm Truck

Just wondering how many miles you have been able to put on a GM truck without having to do much maintenance on it. I was thinking about getting the GMPP extended warranty that would give me 75,000 more miles or 5 more years. Was told about 1500 bucks. Man, I hate to gamble but I would hate even worse to replace a motor or tranny after original warranty runs out.

My '02 has 149,000kms (90,000miles).

So far, no drivetrain issues.

Personally believe this is money lost unless you have knowledge of mechanical problems on your specific truck. My last truck ('97 C1500) was almost trouble free on the items that a warranty would cover past the time I sold it at 110K miles. This was a V-6 W/T that I bought used at 75K, no maintainence records and could tell it was used to pull a horse trailer (tranny fluid looked like molasis when drained @ 100K). Buy yourself some nice add-on, it will be a better investment.

Sold a 97 Sierra to a co-worker and he went over 120,000 today (I asked). Original motor and tranny, no burning or leaks. Only problem was the 4x4 went out twice, somthin to do with the motor that engages the front diff.

Like you said it's a gamble.

Trucks are made far better than they used to be BUT they are also far more complex and expensive to repair when things go wrong. I haven't made my money back on warranties in more than 10 years personally but I still buy them. Peace of mind in my case.

 

Now if you talking about buying a [email protected] could tell you some horror stories :crackup:

I have 177,343 miles on my 98 GMC Sierra.........so far I have replaced 2 fuel pumps, 1 side tank on a radiator, 3 tune ups, 2 set of rotors on the front, and numerous oil changes. Thats all...........now I might be rebuilding the transmission.

My 1993 Silverado which I still have has served me well. I bought it new and have had 1 radiator, 1 starter, 1 water pump. Water pump changed just because it was easy to get to when replacing radiator. 3 alternators too. Usual stuff like brakes, tires, and 1 muffler and tailpie assemby. No trouble until the starter in 2001 and the mileage was over 115000 , so it lasted 9 years. About 3 major tune-ups. My 2003 just turned 49000 today and not one problem, except for the steering shaft. Fixed twice for free. One thing I do differently is that the GM dealer does a major maintainence about every 4 years at about $900 each. All new fluids, belts, filters, plugs,...etc...LIKE A ROCK!!

I purchased warranties on the last 3 GM vehicles and neither one managed to pay for itself. I decided against one on the latest truck. I hope I'm not kicking myself over that, but my rational is 2 of the last 3 were the smaller trucks (an S-10 4x4 and a Blazer 4x4) and they are none POS and they did not pay for themselves. Everyone agrees the full-size trucks are much more reliable (including discussions with several dealer service people that I trust) than the previous generation small trucks. That is my reasoning for not buying the warranty on the new truck.

 

As far as miles on recent vehicles:

 

1990 S-10 Blazer 4x4 4.3L no problems until well over 100k miles. That truck was still running strong when I sold it at 180k miles

 

2000 S-10 P/U 4x4 4.3L sold at 85k miles and the only thing I had done under the ext warranty was the oil cooler lines and I could have replaced those myself

 

2000 Blazer 4x4 4.3L at 90k miles - This one came close on the warranty paying for itself, but still shy. It's had ball joints replace TWICE, front hub bearings on both sides, and a set of oil cooler lines.

I'm not telling you what you should do, but I choose to take a chance and hopefully save my money.

do you tow or snow plow with it? sometimes it might payoff then. I been buying them around the end of the 36mo/36k Bumper to bumper part of the warranty " if I see a lot of problems appearing". you can get a GMPP up till you pass either of those 2 #'s so if you buy a 4/75 0r 5/75 later in the game your covered for over 100k total miles. But if your gonna trade it in 5 years its never really going to be worth it. the powertrain warranty they include now would cover the most expensive parts.

I put a well over a couple hundred thousand on my '89, and over 150 thousand on my '92 without major hiccups. At least none that I didn't cause by abuse :crackup:

 

My '02 had 85-90 thousand on it when I got rid of it, and it was still running like a champ.

 

I've had smashing good luck with my Chevrolets and a couple of Toyotas.

 

The only major (not caused by my abuse) problem that I've had on any out of all my vehicles was the transmission on the TBSS sh*t 2nd gear at 13,000 miles.

220,000 on an 01 Silverado. Up until the fuel pump failed 2 months ago I had spent a total of $830 on maintenance (excluding oil changes etc that I did myself).

 

Fuel gauge stopped working at about 50k and the park brake release cable broke at about $150k, I replaced two tie rod ends and one ball joint. Other than that it has performed flawlessly.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
