Aftermarket Mufflers On Suburbans

I want to get a Magnaflow or similar after market muffler for my Suburban to go with the K&N intake but I am worried about how it will sound inside the vehicle. Right now it is super quiet inside of my 02 2500 4X4 and while I don't mind a deeper throaty sound, I want the upgrade to help performance not sound.

Anybody with a truck won't realize how the sound resinates inside the passenger compartment. I don't want to end up having a harmonics or other big nuisance sound that I can't stand on a long trip. I thought if any of you have upgraded mufflers or the whole cat back on your burb you could help out please

I've installed the Corsa on my Denali and have had it for 4 years. Awesome at idle and full throttle but no resonance at cruising speed.

If your willing, you could install sound deadening material inside the cab to help with the noise. Contact any of these manufactures if your interested. Secondskinaudio.com, or Raamat.com. These guys will give you great advice for covering up exhaust noise in the cab.

Sound deadening is a good fix if you already have a problem, I'm trying not to create an issue before I make a change. Don't you have to rip out your carpet and headliner to install that?

I have a gibson exhaust on my 2002 YukonXL. The noise inside the passenger compartment is fine.

It's obviousily a little louder at the back than in the front, but not enought to interrupt conversation.

After 5 years, no one has complained yet.

Mark, are you towing with your Burb? From reading other posts, an aftermarket exh system will increase you perf at higher revs but will hurt you in the low to mid range. I cannot tell you this from experience but only from what others have posted.

I was looking at a gibson or corsa and gave it up for two reasons. The one listed above and I was afraid my Dear Wife would have me sleeping in the back of the Yukon XL if I made the change and it was too loud.

When I want to hear a little "exhaust music" I just get in my '71 and let r rip. It sounds sooo sweet.

I said it once and Ill say it again. The best combo for a burb is this: K and N drop in ari filter, Air-aid jr intake and here it is : a flowmaster 70 series muffler. Here's why, I own a 04 burb and I spent months investigating and listening to and speaking to people with diff mufflers. I also have a picky wife and 3 small kids who like to watch TV on long trips. The 70 is perfect in sound, picks up a few MPG and heres the best part. If you dont want to loose take off power its the best. See the factory Muffler really gives you the best low end power since these 5.3 engines need some back pressure. If you go with a 50 or 40 series its get worse and worse.

trust me the 70 is the best all around muffler plus I kept the pipes and just changed the muffler cost about $200 installed.

Scott, are you running a dual outlet or kept the single? If you had to put a % to it, how much louder would you say it is at cruising speed compared to the stock muffler. 10%, 20% ???

I have to admit, I did loose some low-end torque after adding the gibson, but gained it back and then some after the wait4me tune.

Did you just do a muffler swap? My wife just wants to do a muffler swap and put on a different tip and that would make her happy. I told her a magnaflow would be too loud inside of the crew cab pickup that she has.

Has anybody tried corvette mufflers? They're quiet, and from what I've seen, those vettes move quite well.

My Dads 94 burb 7.4L runs and sounds sweet, even when yanking his 31' mallard, on flats and rolling hills.

Just a thought. My 01 sierra with 40 series, wrapped with two springs and wires to hold back the the vibration, to deaden the droning in the cab still brings that smirk, when I get on her.

I have a 1500 2004 Suburban and I just added the 70 series flowmaster. I wanted a little rumble, but not have it too loud on the highway. Unfortunately it does drone and is quite loud on my Suburban. I read somewhere else that anything with an exhaust longer than 6 feet is going to drone. My wife hates it. I am going to try a resonator to see if that helps and if not, I am going to yank it and put my stock muffler back on. Honestly, so far I think I made a mistake.

For comparison, I ran 50 series Flowmasters on all my Chevy P/Ups before we got the Suburban and loved them. It is just a different beast with an SUV.

By the way, I live in Los Angeles and take hills to and from work and going up hill in the 1800 to 2100 rpm range is where it gets annoying.

I have heard great things about the Corsa Touring not droning, I just didn't want to spend the money for a full catback and have always liked the Flowmaster sound.

Yup, I got this 2500 4X4 with a 8.1 - 496 cubic inches of unadulterated American horsepower and torque to add another tow vehicle to my stable of fine GM products

I have already added a drop in k&N and I have not one intention of changing our any pipes except maybe for a SS exhaust tip, but I was just entertaining the idea of a after market muffler for better fuel economy BUT I do not want to at the risk of causing my family to go tone deaf on a long trip to Colorado pulling the travel trailer.

I am really weary of how a street muffler can do funny things with harmonics to the inside of a SUV that it wouldn't cause in a crew cab pick-up

thats is the scenario I am afraid of, thanks for posting that and I hope you get it where you can stand it.

I left the single out. Now I know some guys on this post said it still droned but I think that because they changed the factory piping. The key is just changing the muffler. mine is about 10% louder at idle, 30% louder at cruise speed. 0% louder off throttle and 35% louder on hard pulls. Listen my wife was a bugger about a muffler change and this one was fine with her. The kids like it, I like , and she lives with it. 70, 70, 70 flomaster I still say its the best of both worlds.
