Side Exit Exhaust, Before Or After Rear Axle?

about a month ago i started a thread about what i wanted to do with my exhaust. however, after some research and such and decided what i wanted was too extreme, illegal in my state, and not worth my money. so, instead, i decided to do a typical cat-back, split rear exhaust. single inlet, dual outlet flowmaster muffler and im taking it to a shop tomorrow. my last dilemma is where to have it exit. id really prefer it to exit in front of the rear tire. but they said there might be some spac eissues. anyone know anything about doing this? i dont thik there should be a problem- my truck is long and there should be a lot of room for it.,, but we'll see. does anyone have any experience with this? is there any sound/performance difference connected to where it exits? pics would also help, thatnks

I've seen lots of people with it exiting in front of the tires. But you have to play with placement on the driver side due to the fuel tank.

I personally don't like it on newer trucks, I believe it only looks good on an old square body or older, but thats just personal preference.

Some states illegal in front of rear tire.Check it out where you live , sounds like legal was an issue for you before.

i dont think there will be any legal issues, it was emissions that caused me problems, since we have cali emissions and the headers werent 50 state legal,and to runa true dual exhaust i had to cut off and move the o2 sensor- not worth it.

Unless you have some sort of ground effects, I wouldn't put it in front of the rear wheels. Just doesn't look right.

ASK FORD!

In 1997 they came out with their catfish body style truck and it had exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheel. The funk coming out of the tailpipe discolored the right rear wheel and Ford was soon offering a free replacement for the tailpipe that exited behind the rear wheel. Later trucks all had the rear exit.

If you want your exhaust really loud don't have either. Just put the muffler on and two 90* turn downs on the outlets. no exhaust routing no fab cost just 15 min with a saws all, and 10min of welding on two 90* elbows.

i decided on a side exit behind the rear wheels. love it so far. its gotten a little louer since i first got it back and ive noticed a little bit of a power increase. heres a pic:

i like it. and zembonez- very interesting, i never knew that.

Definately before the rear axle, I don't have pic now of mine cause I'm at work

I've had my Magnaflow exiting before my rear wheel for over a year and even in the winter with sparce washing it was never, ever covered with anything but road dust. Come on dude, we're talking Silvys here. Even revvin mine to almost 6000rpm I do not blow anything out of my exaust to dirty my truck. Think about it, your comparing it to a FORD

I wasn't comparing it to anything... just passing along Ford's issue. They replaced a lot of exhaust and wheels. Besides...You KNOW the stuff coming out of our trucks is better than something a FORD spits out.

I think the design you chose looks great for your truck.

I agree pipes before axle tend to look better on older models.

Also, just a thought: Assume if your engine was using all the sudden oil. If so, you probably don't want to have pipes before your axle.

Mine comes out at the bumper, so nothing gets dirty except the bumper after like 6 months of not cleaning it lol but out the back was my best move and I love it.
