Just bought a 2001 1500 4.8L and 50% of the time it will crank over for 3-5 seconds and then fire

i cleaned out the throttle body a little and that seemed to help but it still doesent start right away

do you have any tricks or tips to fix the problem?

It may possibly be your Fuel Pressure Regulator. It is in your fuel rail on the driver's side of the truck. Mine was having this problem and I replaced it...problem went away. I bought my parts at the dealer because I have heard that parts bought from Auto Parts stores may not fit properly. Anyway, the whole job took about 20 mintues. If you do a search on this forum for "Fuel Pressure Regulator" you will find good info on installation/removal.

This may not be your problem but one that doesn't take long to check. This link will show you where the FPR is located. I used my Haynes manual as well as the info that came with the parts I bought from the dealer. Here is the link: Fuel Pressure Regulator

Hope this helps.

OR it could be your check valve which is part of the fuel pump assm. I would try the regulator 1st cause it's much cheaper and really easy to replace.

Another vote for fuel pressure regulator on the intake manifold. Been there, done that.

Just pull the vacume line off the regulator, if gas comes out when you do that then the regulator is no good... if no gas comes out then the regulator is fine, replace your fuel pump...

WARNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure the engine is OFF when you pull off the hose to check for raw fuel.

Pulling hose off while running may cause the engine to"runaway" (aka eratic

high uncontrolled idle speed) !
