How Do I Hoop Up 7 Pin Trailer Harness

Recommended Posts

My 99 Tahoe with the heavy duty towing package just has 4 wires hanging where the 4 pin connector must have been before.

I want to hook up a 7 pin harness and trailer brake controller under the dash.

How difficult is this on this truck?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

I bought a 4 pin to 7 pin adapter off of Ebay. Don't remember exactly how much, but it wasn't that much.

In 99 the Tahoe did not have any kind of plug that was factory wired - the harness that went to the back bumper area had 7 wires for use on travel trailers - the brake and +12V were only wired to the engine compartment, there you had to install a fuse for the 12V in the relay box and run the blue brake wire through the firewall for your controller. The extra 3 wires are for brakes, +12V, and back-up lights. The other 4 are Tail/marker lights, RH turn/brake, LH turn/brake, and GND.

The controller also had to be wired into the proper ckts on the fuse block - you need 12V. Gnd, the blue wire to the brakes, and a signal wire from the brake switch. I think there are spare pins on the fuse/connector block located on the left hand side of the floorboard. I had mine wired directly to the brake switch wire- just to make sure. I mounted my controller on the right side of the steering wheel under the dash - right under the 4WD selector switch.

As for adaptors I have seen 7 pin to 4 pin models - but there is no way to make a 4 pin into a 7 pin.
