Tranny Temps

Hi!

I was wondering what the normal operating temps are for a 4l60E. I have a 4l60E with 72000 and runs 165-167 on the Interstate and around 150-160 on the highway according to my Scan Gauge. Is this ok or is it high? Also, that is no load, just cruising. I would appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Anyone?? Truck shifts fine and works ok, just wondering if 150-170 is too high? What do you guys think??

Seems pretty normal to me. My DIC says 160 to 190 depending on what I am doing with the truck when it is warmed up.

Your temps are fine. Anything below 200 IMO is good. GMs trans temp warning light is set to alert you at approx 250 degrees. This is too high IMO and according to companies such as True Cool, Hayden and B & M. I am running about 160 according to my Interceptor gauge while towing a 6500 lb camper on a mid 90s temp day. However, I have upgraded my OE aux trans cooler just so I could run in this range while towing. If you did tow anything of significance, you would likely see your temps move up 20 degrees or so from where you are running right now.

I wonder if I should go with a cooler? I've hit 190 temps on a hot day in the hills pulling my boat. Temps run much much cooler when not towing... any opinions?

Jim, if your truck does not have an aux cooler at all, I would absolutley recommend you add one. Especially seeing that you live in TX. 190 degrees is not too hot, especially with the new Dex VI syn fluid, but if you ever were towing anything bigger and the outside temps were in the upper 90s or 100s, you would see some temps well over 200. IMO, this is too hot. Besides, I simply like some "margin" just in case. You can overcool the fluid if you live in a cold climate, but where you and I live, there is nothing to worry about.

If you are not sure if you have an aux cooler, look just behind your GMC logo in the grille and if it is there, it will look like a small radiator approx 5" x 11".

If you decide to add one or upgrade the one you have, PM me and I will be happy to send you some pics of mine installed and will provide you with some specs of what I am using and what I recommend.
