Question From Canada -daytime Running Lights

Hello all,

 

I am sure this has been touched on before but I had some issues with the search feature of this site.

 

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500, and I am curious if anyone has any directions on disabling the daytime running lights on my truck. I only use this truck for hunting up here at our lodge and the truck does not see public roads, so we have no need for these lights to be on since we are trying to achieve some sort of stealth when heading out to the field to hunt.

 

If anyone has any information or directions on what it will take, it would really help.

Well you can do a couple things....Either remove the DRL bulbs (Which you can do on the GMT800 trucks) or do what I do in my trucks,Remove the DRL fuse.

I've done that to all my trucks I've had with DRL's,A '97,'99,'04 and my current '07.

Interesting about Canada. Daytime running lights are mandated - I think.

 

I have been to Canada and about half the cars have daytime lights on. And the ones not on are not older cars.

you are correct, DRLs are mandated by Canada.

You could splice into the DRLs and control with a switch on the console. I'm a bit paranoid so I "jumped" all my DRL relays to energize the low beams. I also jumped the hi beams to keep the low beams on. I continued to allow my fogs to go off if the hi beams are on though.

The DRL's usually shut off when the e-brake is depressed. There's a contact switch on the e-brake. Have a look under the dash. You could splice another switch into that if you want to easily return the function of DRL's. Either in series or parallel depending on the function of the existing switch (open the circuit or closes it).

Yes, we are stuck with a mandated always on DRL. I ended up buying a switch for my 04 Sierra Denali from the US to try to resolve this issue and still no luck. Al I accomplished was to get the DRL's to shut off during the day when in Park. At night on the other hand, the DRL's stay on regardless of the position the transmission is in. But then, at night there is no way of turning the headlights off either when the ignition is on. I also use my truck for hunting and it can be frustrating. It is not as frustrating as sitting in the ferry lineups at night trying to get onto or off Vancouver Island and having your lights blinding the poor SOB trying to get some shut eye in the vehicle ahead of you. I ended up popping the hood and tucking jackets in so they hung over the lights, before I took a small pen light and layed it on the dash beside the ambient light sensor under a dark piece of cloth. As for the e-brake trick, as soon as you depress it enough to trigger the sensor on the (at least) 02 and up, the warning dinger goes off saying your e-brake is on. This trick works with other late model GM's.

 

Without pulling fuses, we are stuck with the problem as far as I know. If there is a solution, I'd love to learn about it as well.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
