Remote Start

If I get a key fob (say ebay or a friend) with the remote start, will the dealer flash my computer so itll work? I have code and the fob is from a NBS truck. I just want to make sure I dont have to get it from GMpartsdirect or the Dealer. I can switch fobs with my buddy and I hopefully will be able to use it. anyone know?

I have the same question. Is the the code on the truck or the code on the FOB keys? That is needed.

If anyone has heard about the new 2 way fobs or has an update on them it would be appreciated. This is the fob that has a light on it that tells you your truck is running.

My 07 NBS fob remote start only works within close range. Anyway to amplify that? would be nice to start my truck from inside the building I work at, rather then wait until I am 50 ft. from the truck in the parking lot. Don't want to go aftermarket, just don't like the aftermarket remote starter fobs... more or less I hate having too much crap on my key chain.

I wish GM made this remote start more practical. It is nice when the truck is outside my house and I can hear it start up, but anywhere other then my driveway the remote start is useless.

Google "RI-GM-1" it is a module that plugs in that extends your range to 1500'. You have to use their fob but it replaces all factory functions so you don't have to carry 2 fobs.

Looks like it doesn't include the new trucks yet. Also, I am curious if this will affect the factory warranty for the remote start? Can/will a dealer install this to eliminate warranty issues?

Not asking for me, because my truck sits in my garage all night and right outside the window here at work so range is not an issue for me. I can even see the lights come on and the exhaust if I want.

Last I read, for the 900 trucks, one has to have the code: AP8 inside the glove box. If AP8 is there all one needs is the FOB from GM.

My question still stands. Is it the remote FOB code that is needed or the code from the truck?

If its like the remote locks, it has a random algorythm that has to sync, so youd have to make your truck send a learn or sync signal by using a button combo, then another combo on the FOB. I would guess they use the same proven system.

So, can one obtain a used remote start FOB?

If the code has beed used on another vehicle then it will not work. The dealer has to call into GM techline with the code (if the code has been used before then it becomes invalid) and they write a new program that the dealer has to download into the bcm.

OK, so hypothetical. I have a used FOB for remote start. It is used. It has no numbers on it. It looks excellent condition.

Can a dealer program the used FOB that has no numbers on it if vehicle has AP8?

I believe the dealer also has to hook up to the computer and activate and program it to work if you have that AP8 code

The AP8 code just means it has the option to add keyless entry. The remotes don't have a code on them, technically all the remotes are the same for the nbs, just the cases are different. When you buy the upgrade kit for keyless entry there is a code in the box with 2 new remotes.

I called the dealership and they said they dont care where the FOB comes from. As long as its for a NBS truck they can program the Remote Start for my truck and I can do the remote locks myself.
