This may be stupid, but i was considerig swapping out my stock 4.10's and going with a set of 3.73's.

 

I have the 6.0 and dont pull very heavy loads any more. I would like the better mpg. since i will have enough motor behind behind it what do you the performance would be like? I would like a better to have a better take off.

 

is this stupid?

You will lose some grunt on the low end. My guess is that fuel economy would improve a little but probably not as much as you might think. Do you have OEM sized tires? Oversized tires can wreak havoc on your fuel economy. (but boy are they cool)

The low end is not a big deal, probably b/c i dont know what is is like to have 3.73's behind a 6.0. right now the truck takes off the same wether it is towing a bass boat or not. I am just wondering if it would be worth it.

 

I would like to be able to really take off on an on ramp, since here in pennsylvania we have the dumbest system and very often have to wait stopped before the merging off ramp traffic passes

I think 3.73s with a 6.0 would still be darn good performance. In some areas of performance they might even be better. As far as the fuel economy goes, let's see if some of our other 6.0 owners chime in later today... I don't know what kind of gain you might expect.

3.73's plus either bigger tires will give better highway MPG's but as jim stated you will loose a good bit of low end. It would be cheaper and will probably yield the same results if you keep the current gearing and get a 285 tire.

Maybe if you're 2wd - and you're gonna install them yourself - you might offset the cost within a year. If you're a 4x4 - fuggetaboutit. The labor + new gears will cost you more than you will make up for in gas mileage. I'd stay with the 4.10s personally.

Going to larger tires will do the same thing - for a lot less money - it sounds like you are getting close to changing tires soon anyway. I have the new 6sp and with the 4:1 first gear coupled to the 4.10 rear gears I have loads of starting torque. In fact I am in third gear by the time I cross an intersection - unless I am towing my TT- then I am in second.
