HD RADIO

 

I have the bug to try it. Home components are only about 200 bucks and the sound is supposed to be really improved over the typical FM broadcast. There are TONS of HD broadcasters in my area. (46 to be exact)

 

Does anybody have one?

 

Are they what they are cracked up to be?

I Know BMW uses them now...so it must be good....right?

 

I'm not too sure if there are any broadcasters in Canada yet...but I would say I could pick up some from WA.

After all the awesome reviews of Sat Radio, I've learned not to trust other peoples opinion when it comes to audio quality. :D But I might need to pick one up fairly soon to see how it compares to Sat radio, CD, FM, etc. But I gotta say, if it can't hang with CD audio quality - forget it.

Yeah... I agree with you on that other people's opinion thing. The main point that the HD radio pushes is the giant leap in sound quality since the signal is broadcast digitally. I am not all that sold on Sat radio's quality myself.

 

Still can't compete with a good piece of vinyl.

 

I'm going to just have to hear it myself.

I have the Sangean Home HD receiver running off a simple FM dipole indoor antenna on the 2nd floor of a 3 floor apartment complex about 25 miles from Austin's transmitter towers. I am in the middle of installing one in my truck with my Eclipse AVN6610 Nav unit (which doesn't fit! Please see my other post if you can help me out!)

 

Anyway, I was surprised at the number of stations that I already listen to that were broadcasting in HDRadio & I didn't know it. Go to HDRadio.com for a listing of stations as well as of equipment available.

 

I'm an avid audiophile with better hearing than most. Minored in acoustics in college & was a Sonar officer in the Navy. I had satellite radio & cancelled my subscription. (Sirius). Just too much compression artifacts.

 

I got the Sangean unit that has the digital optical output, and use a Denon 3805 receiver for the D/A conversion playing over a complete M&K 7.2 system (yes, 7 speakers plus 2 subs, although 'officially' the subs are on one channel, not two)

 

The HDRadio sound is a lot better than FM - that's for sure. Still not sure if it quite rivals CD quality - the jury is still out there. But the end result is I liked it enough to drop some more coin on the unit for the truck - that should say a lot. YMMV.

Probably wouldn't matter too much to me than since my low and high ranges are at a 25db loss, and I have mild to moderate Tinnitus.

I'm a Navel weapons tech, similar to a fire control tech, the guns, HP air leaks and hydraulic machinery are loud, power tools are too...My hearing is shot after 5 years of this....

Dude, I'd listen to someone else's first! I've lost 15db in some ranges from my time in the engineroom (or was that from the 20 years of age?? :rolleyes: )

 

I had some extra cash from cleaning out my closet & selling stuff on eBay, so I went ahead & bought the home unit to give it a try. I figured if I didn't like it, I could sell it & maybe only lose $20 - so it was a cheap experiment.

That's the Sangean component version right?

 

I am running a Denon 3803... might have to try it out. Im between Austin and San Antonio.

I dredged up this old thread of mine rather than post another one. It's been a while... and it didn't get much response way back when. Any more input here on HD radio? Anybody else using it yet? Opinions?

I just hope the government doesn't get the bright (IOW, completely ****ing retarded) idea to end analog radio like they are doing with television in February 2009. If you live in areas with fringe reception, you're shit out of luck.

I read in another forum that PAC makes a add on unit for the gm factoryt radio it is 89.00 us dollars this will let you get the hd signals and retain all factory options but it requires another part that actually plugs into the factory radio that was i think 189.00 us dollars this part will allow aux input and control an ipod through the factory radio i think it has 169 in the part number for 29 bit gm xlan system. This is for the gmt 900 trucks which I think you have.

If you are really wanting to try this stuff will try and find the part numbers and get back to ya. But it might be a week due to work schedule. Up comming week I work 7 of 8 days 16 hrs so do not do much during my hell weeks except come home and go to sleep. So please be patient I will eventually get the info if you ask for it.

Sure. If it isn't much trouble, No real hurry but I'd like to know. If it gets too expensive, I guess I could go with an aftermarket setup in the truck.

 

Jury is still out on the home unit. Too many other projects got in the way.

I could not find the posts that I got this info from but did try so I am unable to give the proper source info and am sorry for that I am a member of several gm truck forums; so with that stated here a few links that I saved from the topic that I read below I hope the links will work as I have never tried to post links in a msg before.

 

first site you just fill in your info and it will display the parts that fit if you go to the home page but i have done a 2008 chevy to get these parts which i think will do the job from my understanding of the posts that I read.

now I think the pac units, you just need the 2 above parts and you are good to go; based on my understanding of the posts

 

now if there was a way with these two groups of products to get blue tooth as well I would be all over these cause I want to have blue tooth as well so I can use my portable phone vs the truck phone-onstar stuff that way I can just let the onstar end and still use the truck mic and speakers for phone hands free stuff.

 

So anybody that figures this out; please give me a shout will part with money if it can do all the above, there has to be a solution to the above requirements I have.

 

It will be a while before I can possibly get back due to crazy work schedule that I have

      This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.

      consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.

      can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?

      Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
