Tire Bounce Question

Recommended Posts

I had some Firestone Destination A/T's put on my truck awhile back and between 40 and 45 mph, the truck bounces like a basketball. After I get past 45, it smooths out and rides fine. Up to 40 it rides fine also. Is this a balance problem or bad tires or what? The shop said they would rebalance them but I haven't got it back there yet. It's really frustrating as most of my driving lately has been in that speed range due to road work and such. Thanks for any ideas.

What year and type is the vehicle? On my 06 2500HD I'd get a pretty bad shake around 45, nothing I did fixed it so I just lived with it and I guess it went away eventually...There's some TSB about it and basically it's a vibration issue with the frame that can't be helped.

Did you check to your air pressure with a tire gauge? From my experience, as well as listening to others, many tire installation shops will pump new tires up with way too much air.

have them rebalanced and check them again for bounce. if it is still there, rotate the tires. if it's still there, then have the front end looked at.

good luck

If it were a balance issue I would think you'd see more problems at higher speeds but that isn't ALWAYS the case. I agree with some of the others in here. Check and see what kind of air pressure they put in them. May be way too high.

Second, I would go ahead and have them rebalanced. It's always good to get tires rebalanced after a breakin period. Tires can slip on the rim because of the assembly lube which ruins your balance.

I have Destination ATs on my Jeep and it rides better than it ever has with any other kind of tire. I'd buy em all over again.

EDIT: Have the shop check for a bent wheel when they balance.

I had the same vibration in my truck (in the shop as I am writing this), the service manager called back and said that my tires were not balanced (balanced them under warranty), tie-rods were way too loose (replaced and tightened to specs) and the front right passenger arm was too loose (replaced it and torqued to specs). Not a good feeling since I only got 22,000 miles on the truck, I took them for a test drive and they immediately knew where to look. *sigh* it has been 2 days and they are waiting on parts from GMSPO.......

"tie-rods were way too loose" "the front right passenger arm was too loose"

Sounds suspiciously like a technician that is either "LOST" or looking for good filler work to flag. I'm gonna be really surprised if either of those fixes it. What dealer are you using in Austin?

Same dealership I bought it at: Henna Chevrolet off I35 and US 183. I looked at the TSBs and it says that it could be the tie rods out of spec, they said that they found a bad bushing, and now a bearing (dont ask, cause that was all that was on my Voicemail tonight). I plan to take delivery of it from the service department tomorrow (dont know why they threw in an oil change) and see if it is quiet. everyone here knows that the powertrain is great, just the D**M noises, creaks and interior quality build sucks. I also plan to scan the R.O. and post it online if what I find is suspicious. and by the way not to thread jack but this is the 3rd time that the I-Shaft is clunking, and this is with the revised part. *whatever*

i'm glad others have noticed this. Mine is starting to do this as well. Once I get it over 50 it rides nice and smooth, once ina while on the highway I notice it.

I especially notice this when on a hill.

Can anyone point me to the TSB site where I can look this up?

+1

Definitely check for bent wheel. Road Force balancing will discover this.
