Would You Be Concerned

Would you be concerned already? My 6 week old '07 on the bottom of the bumper has rust - a lot of it. The whole surface that faces down and a little up on the side is rust. It's pretty thick rust mixed in with some pitting. If you run your hand along the bottom of the bumper very hard you'll get cut.

Would you be concerned this quickly that it will spread up the bumper?

Yeah, I'd take it in under warranty. Mine is rusting on the inside of the bumpers but nothing major, such as flaking.

Yeah the inside wouldn't bother me at all, but I have a feeling the rust thru the chrome like it is now it's just a matter of time before it spreads a lot - but wanted some second opinions.

My nearly 10 year old truck has very little rust on the outside it; and that is with 10 MN winters. If I was in your situation I would definitely bring it in and have it checked out.

I got rid of my '99 Silverado this spring because I was alarmed at the amount of rust that was beginning to take over the truck. Both rocker panels were shot and the paint on the outer rear fenders were flaked off on both sides to reveal half-dollar sized areas of rusty sheet metal.

I would be concerned about your bumper. But I bought a new GMT-900 and have faith that this will hold up longer to the amount of salt that is spread on central PA roads.

My God GM still can't produce a brand new rust free truck? My 96's inside of the bumpers, rear axle leaf springs, driveshaft etc. etc. was completely rusted from DAY ONE. Although I must say after almost 12 yrs now, there is close to zero rust on the body. Definatley have that taken in for a warranty claim, these trucks should be top notch as far as rust prevention goes, I mean that truck hasn't even been through a winter yet

Both rocker panels and under-doors on my 2000 Sierra are in need of replacing due to rust.

My frame is pretty bad too, but someone undercoated it to hide it.

It was originally a Michigan truck, but I didnt know that at time of purchase.

And I gotta stop putting the rust repair off. I know it will just keep spreading.

You know the whole suspension and some of the frame isn't even painted on the NBS trucks I believe from looking at it. It's covered with a grease like cosmoine or something but if you smear it off it's plain metal under it.

Yea, I figured this out on my dads new 06 Sierra 2500 when i touched it. It left a big mark. I cant beleive they would leave it like this.

Seems like a good-powered water hose would spray it right off.

I went by the dealer today on Sunday while they were closed. Every truck on the lot had the same rust on the bumper on the bottom where the water drops collect when it's sitting there after a rain like today.

They even had an '08 Z-71 with the white plastic still on the back fenders they just took off the transporter....rusted on the bottom chromoe part of the bumper....

Oh about 10 - 15 years ago all the manufacturers made claims about rust protection.

During this time, all truck manufacturers sprayed the frame and undercarriage with a brownish waxy coating. Rusty Jones had long since gone bankrupt as too many rust claims.

Anyway, I see that this wax coatings are no longer used. My guess is that the bean counters cut this back as well as the CAFE MPG people as it added weight.

But here's a good one. My uncle purchased a new Ford Escort years ago. I asked about rustproofing - Ziebart and Rusty Jones were still in business doing rustproofing. No, he paid for some sort of electric contraption that the salesman told him came from the technology at shipyards. See . . . the big ships all have this to prevent the steel ships from rusting.

It's so long ago, I can't remember what the speel was. Something like negative ions and salt has positive ions or some such story. The 'module' hooked up to the battery and then to the body. He paid $295.00 for this from dealer.

Needless to say, the car rusted over time. Just like any other Escort up here in winter salt land.

Any idea what is rusting? Is it the actual bumper or the mounting hardware rusting leaving rusty water marks on the chrome. Mine has been parked out all week in the rain. Pulled it into the garage tonight and can't find a problem. Wonder if it takes a substantial amount of water such as an open bed draining out under the tailgate and down the backside of the bumper? My bed is covered so doesn't see that much water.

Take a real close look at your NBS frame, it is wax coated. Actually looks like it may have been dipped and left to drip-dry as I see runs & drips inside the cross tubes. However, nothing else is sealed so expect the rest of the underbody hardware to get crusty.

It's the actual chrome part of the bumper - where the rear bumper rolls down that 1" lip is solid rust, both on my 6 week old one and the new ones on the lot.

It rained here today, so when I went to the lot they all had water drops hanging there...and it was all rusted.

If it was frame/suspension I wouldn't care at all...but when the chrome is already rusting it's only a matter of time before water gets under it and it works its way up to the side you see from the back.

No use in taking it back for another one which obviously rust as well. Just gonna put another bumper on it that's black and be done with it forever.

Wonder how long they give you to claim this under warranty? Might just be a bad batch of parts, might be better to wait a while before getting a replacement. They might not even realize this is a problem yet.

I did crawl under mine with a flashlight again. No sign of bumper rust and it's been on the road since the beginning of April including the last snow/salt event. All the mounting hardware is even still clean. Was bumming a little, the paint on the receiver/hitch frame is starting to bubble.
