Plowing With A 2wd

I'm thinking of getting a used plow just for doing my driveway, but am thinking the 2wd might be a problem... I'm putting in a locker VERY soon, so it's not gonna be a 1wd anymore.... And I have a 400 lb shurtrax in the bed giving me some traction. Am I thinking too highly of my truck, and should wait until I get that 2500hd in a few years, or could I make it work?

Thanks

How long is your driveway? Why dont you buy a normal snowblower?

I may be missing something here, since snow doesnt exist here in Louisiana.

Plows are expensive just for your own driveway. And 2WD ain't gonna cut it.

It's cheaper to pay someone to plow driveway. Your better off buying a beater 4WD and putting plow on that.

I pay to have my driveway plowed AND I have a snow thrower. Ariens.

And I have a new GMT900 4WD with plow prep package and I still may never purchase a plow.

Just my $0.02 cents.

Weight in the bed and locker + chains may be enough to get you by for moderate snow. Still, I'd pay somebody or buy a decent snowblower.

Using a snow plow with a 2WD vehicle is similar to using a 2WD tractor with a front loader. The extra load in the front takes the weight off the rear wheels to the point where traction on a slippery surface is minimal. I have a truck that would do a good job plowing - a 6x6 Army deuce and half.

But there is no snow to plow here in Florida.

why dont you stick on a rear hitch, I did that when I went to Lubbock, cousin and I rigged a plow to my Class IV hitch and I stuck it in reverse, worked pretty well considering I have 2WD, but I had to chug through the snow to do it.

new years in lubbock texas, here in austin the closest thing we get to snow is freezing rain and black ice.....yeah yeah I know stupid running around in the snow with a 2WD (actually 1WD all things considered)

I've driven 2wd full size trucks in the snow for a few years now, it's nothing hard. I've driven this truck on a few inches of snow on the roads... actually it's quite fun. With some common since and a few bags of gravel in the bed it's easy as cake and you don't need a 4wd. Then again I've never been in a ditch in this truck (knock on wood) :rollin: My old 88 F150 RC LB 2wd trucked thru the snow with some cheap A/T tires and some weight in the bed, that thing refused to get stuck!! Ditch or no ditch! It just takes some driving skill

I may be crazy, but I've driven 2wd trucks and 4wd trucks in Maine winters and it *seems* to me a 2wd truck is better in the snow than a 4wd truck in 2wd mode. Has anyone else ever noticed this? (Obviously the 4wd in 4x4 mode is near unstoppable).

Take it from someone who has been there....DON'T.

You can do it for a couple inches of snow...But anything around the 4-6" and more....your screwed...

Snowblower, or buy a quad with the plowing attachment...you get a snowplow...and a new toy. And, you can sell it to the wife cause you need it for plowing, not at all for bombing around in the bogs in the summer time :rollin:
