Engine Heat

Well my temp gauge on my truck reads 240ish after running it til operating temp around town,

 

so i figured i would turn the heater on and it blows cold

 

when i stop in traffic the gauge goes up but when i get moving it goes down, but not below 230ish

Sounds like you have a thermostat gone bro.

 

Or a water pump.

 

Thermostat is easiest thing to check though. Pull it out and drop it in a pot of boiling water with a thermometer, it should open at the temp stamped on its base. anything higher and its pooched. I believe the stock Thermostat temp is 180*, don't quote me on that though, just look at the thermo and see whats stamped on it.

Oh...BTW...I forgot to mention...watch the thermometer very closely, it is supposed to open at one temp and be fully open at another....ensure you keep a close eye on the temp of the water and the position of the poppet of the t-stat, its not a very large movement.

Are you sure it is reading 240 or is perhaps 210? If it is 240 I would not be driving it around until you diagnos the problem. Is the coolant full? If not fill after it cools off and then look in the area of the water pump for a leak. The gauges are notorious for giving incoorect readings. My brand new trucks gauge shows 210, but if you hook up a code scanner to it , it will shoe the coolant temperature as 183-185. Some of this could be from one sensor reading just before going into the radiator to be cooled, and the other being pulled from just after coming out of the radiator but I am not sure.

 

Also, you could have so little coolant circulating that there is not enough to make the heater operate correctly.

The thing is the engine isnt any hotter than it normally is, il check the coolant but i havent seen any leaks,

 

and i positive about what the gauge said it goes from 100-210-260 on the scale and it was in between 210-260 about half way.

 

Does the heater blow heat from the engine coolant?

You may have a bad water pump or a blockage in it. While your at it change out the t-stat.

Yes, it circulates through a heater core to provide the heat to the passenger compartment and recirulates through the whole cooling system, radiator, water pump, engine. So, no or real low coolant-- no heat. Lack of coolant can also make your gauge malfunction. It has no water to pick up the correct temperature.

I put 50/50 Dex in it and its a lot better, the heater blows warmer, but its time for a coolant flush so il do that and see how it does.

OEM thermostat is a 195F and unless you have a custom tune it will hurt fuel economy. PCM thinks engine isnt at operating and will always add more fuel as it would in a cold engine. Hard on rings & bearings.

So I assume it was low on coolant? Also, from your picture it appears you do some heavy duty muddin. Might take a spray hose and clean the nud out of the fins on the radiator so air can pass thru them .

Yep so far all i know is it was low on coolant, and after every trip out the dirt i always wash it good and clean out the radiator tranny cooler etc.......

 

I try to take care of it the best i can i just overlooked the coolant

 

It seems to be holding coolant great now it must have been an air bubble in the system and it finally worked its way out.

 

Im flushing out the entire system tomorrow so that will help.

Well i got the Coolant Flushed and the new stuff in, and found out that my Intake Manifold gasket is leaking and that is how the coolant has been disappearing, also the 1 1/4" plug thats on the Block by the Block heater is also leaking but not as bad.

 

The intake leak is minor but im gonna need to get it fixed soon before i do anymore damage.

 

Is there anything you guys recommend i replace while im at it?
